The U.K.-based International Society for Dental Anxiety Management aims to bring together all psychological, pharmacological, clinical, and technological techniques utilised in helping people overcome their fears and phobias. The website is currently under development but you can join the facebook group here: ISDAM facebook group.

The Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD) is a U.K.-based dental charity dedicated to the advancement of knowledge in pain and anxiety control for dentistry. It provides postgraduate education by running courses encouraging the safe provision of conscious sedation for dentistry, for both dentists and dental nurses. The society also produces the journal “SAAD Digest”, which is published annually and presents interesting research and product news. Membership of the society is open to any registered medical or dental practitioner, dental nurse or dental therapist.

The Dental Sedation Teachers Group is a mainly hospital based group, which provides a forum for all individuals who are interested in the teaching of conscious sedation in dentistry. The membership includes dental and medical practitioners and nurses from academia, hospital, community and general practice.

Courses

Short Courses

  • The Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD) offers 2-day sedation courses in London for both dentists and nurses. The course for dentists is designed for practitioners who wish to commence the administration of sedation techniques and also as an update for those who wish to keep abreast of current professional standards. Mainstream techniques (intravenous midazolam and Relative Analgesia) are covered in detail.
  • The RA Coach: Richard Charon runs very popular relative analgesia courses in the UK.
  • Yorkshire Sedation Training: Adam Glassford and Geoff Baggaley provide training for the dental team in intravenous sedation and relative analgesia.

Postgraduate Courses

  • Conscious Sedation Techniques for Dentistry Module 1 and Module 2: This course aims to provide an understanding of the attitudes, knowledge and skills required for the practice of conscious sedation in dentistry and to enable the clinician to develop competence in the management of patients using basic conscious sedation techniques through supervised clinical practice.
  • Conscious Sedation for Dentistry PgDip at King’s College London: Students study applied basic sciences, conscious sedation, inhalation/intravenous sedation techniques and management of possible complications.
  • Conscious Sedation in Dentistry (MSc/Diploma) at Cardiff University: This course aims to offer knowledge and expertise in the science and practice of conscious sedation, from theory of psychological interventions, including behavioural and cognitive management to the full range of conscious sedation techniques for adults and children.
  • Conscious Sedation in Dentistry PgDip at Newcastle University: The course provides dental practitioners with systematic understanding of theoretical principles that underpin conscious sedation and anxiety management, comprehensive practical understanding of clinical skills in techniques of intravenous and inhalational conscious sedation as applicable to UK practice in dentistry and ability to critically evaluate evidence-base and clinical issues involved in safe independent practice of conscious sedation.
