Dental Health Information
Whether you're a dental groupie or just looking for information about teeth or dental treatments, you'll find plenty of dental health information on the sites below!
General Information
"Tell me about..." leaflets Brought to you by the British Dental Health Foundation, this site explains lots of dental topics, including all common treatments, in plain English. A questions-and-answers format is used for each topic. Very easy to navigate. An excellent, friendly site if you're looking for straightforward, easy-to-digest information. Highly recommended!
Ask Dr. Spiller My favourite dentistry website. If you don't mind explicit images and you're looking for information on dental health or dental procedures, this is a brilliant site. Honest, straightforward, and well-balanced - and very laid-back, too! Covers almost all aspects of dentistry and dental health, and explains both advantages and disadvantages of various dental treatments. Good advice on prevention. Lots of detail - this is a BIG site!
Animated Teeth Detailed explanations and animations on various dental topics and procedures using graphics.
Simple Steps Dental This site contains lots of information in an easy-to-navigate format. No explicit images.
Dental Advice from Seattle Dentist Ethan Janson Here, you can find an extensive collection of common dental questions asked of Dr Janson, in an agony-aunt style format. Recommended!
ADA - Oral Health Topics A-Z The American Dental Association's A-Z of various oral health care issues. Descriptions tend to be too concise to provide useful information. Little or no discussion of pros and cons of various procedures.
preferredconsumer.com - Dental Care Concise information on some common conditions and dental procedures.
Dentistry at about.com Features regular articles and a huge archive arranged by topic areas, including sections on financing dental care in the US (a topic not covered on most other sites).
Quackwatch and Dentalwatch address some of the myths and "controversies" you may encounter while surfing the web (such as "root canals are dangerous", "amalgam fillings are poison", "fluoride should be banned", and the the elusive NICO cavitations).
TMJ, Clenching and Grinding
TMJ Disorders (MedlinePlus) A brief outline of causes, symptoms, and treatments of TMJ disorders.
headacheprevention.com, migraineprevention.com, and nti-tss.com are essential reading for anyone with grinding or clenching problems.
Dental Implants
Dental Implant Information An overview of routine dental implant treatment for consumers by the Association of Dental Implantology UK.
Cosmetic Dentistry
About Cosmetic Dentistry This website has a very good section explaining various dental procedures which could be classed as "cosmetic". Includes descriptions of fillings, bonding, crowns (aka "caps"), bridges, dentures, implants, bonding, root canals, and whitening. Very clearly presented.
My New Smile Cosmetic dentistry info and more. Written by Dave Hall, a US dentist who's now retired, the site is written in a jargon-free, accessible style and contains plenty of personal opinions and ideas - which make for interesting reading! If you're not into cosmetic dentistry, the site contains some good general dental info.
Gum Disease (Periodontics)
American Academy of Periodontology Quite in-depth information on gum disease and treatment options. Some information can easily be misinterpreted - maybe not the safest bet for those with hypochondriacal tendencies...
Braces (Orthodontics)
Archwired A site for adults with orthodontic braces. Provides a wealth of information, not only covering the technical aspects, but also the psychological impact of wearing braces as an adult. Written (with a little bit of help from dental professionals) by someone who's undergone orthodontic treatment as an adult herself. Also features a busy discussion forum, and a great soft foods section (which also comes in handy after extractions, or while getting used to dentures).
Dental Research
PubMed Search millions of articles published in biomedical journals. Mostly abstracts only, but some records have links to full articles. Bear in mind that abstracts can be misleading... can be very useful though if you're looking for otherwise unobtainable info on more esoteric conditions, or find out more about the efficacy of various treatments.
