i have gum disease and have been to see a specialist and have been told that on a scale of 1-10 my disease is at 4. the cost of cleaning under the gum will be 1-2000 pounds. and then there is no guarentee that this will cure it once and for all.
i ve been considering havig all my teeth pulled out and denturesd fitted.
how do i go about this, whats the procedure for extracting all my teeth and what are the costs pleasr. can it be done on the NHS/ im 32 thankyou xx:confused:

I am not a dentist, but I am a denture wearer. A 4 does not sound too bad. (dentists correct me if I am wrong) Why do you want dentures? Due to cost? Due to dental fear? Do you think by getting dentures, you won't have to deal with the dentist any more?

If it is due to cost, dentures will probably be more costly in the long run. Every 5-7 years, you will probably need to get a new set.

If it is due to fear, this site can help you to deal, if not complaetely over come your fears.

You will still have to see the dentist regularly. Make sure the dentures are fitting properly. Checking on the amount of bone loss, etc. You will have bone loss, due to wearing dentures. Making sure they are properly fitted on a regular basis will help to keep this to a minimum, but without teeth, there will be some bone loss.

For some of us, dentures were the only option, but should always be the last option. If there is anyway to save your teeth, you should try everything to do so.

Re: tiddler

a hard one to answer without actually seeing what stage the gum problem is at.
what exactly is the procedure the dentist is recommending- i can't imagine that they are charging 1-2000 just for a simple scaling under the gums.
my advice is always to hang on to your teeth for as long as you can. If you have no pain or aesthetic concerns- i would go with the intervention to save them.
do you smoke? if so - it's time to stop as you now have to choose either to smoke or to keep your teeth- you can't have both!
ask the dentist/hygienist to go over some advice as to what you can do with regards to cleaning to prevent further problems- there are lots of tips and fancy brushes etc which can help.
regards
