Tooth with root canal and crown hurting

This is the second time this has happened. I had a root canal and crown down around 5 years ago. 2 years ago it started hurting and I went to the dentist. He ended up tearing out the crown and putting a new one in. I guess the tooth is mostly gone because like the first time, he had to do tooth lenghtening procedures. I asked him what happened because in a root canal the tooth is supposed to be dead. He said he didn't know and couldn't tell, but since I reported it hurting he redid it. He does not have a good bedside manner at all so it is hard to talk to him.

Now this is happening again two years after the last time. The tooth is 3 teeth in on the bottom. So far it is not bad, and I am hoping it gets better but does anyone have a clue as to what is happening?

Just because this is the second time doesn't make it his fault, but I am wondering if I should go to a doctor that might be able to tell me what is happening.

Also, the first time it happened during or right after running a marathon, yesterday it happened after running too. I run alot so it might not mean anything but could the fact it happened after a marathon the first time mean anything?

Oh yeah, the gun bleeds after brushing, the first time it had a chemically taste to it. So I assume it is getting infected.

Is it a certainty that I will have to have my crown destroyed to fix this? And is there a possiblity that I won't have to have another root canal done.

I am going to go in my dentist on Friday morning, the same one who worked on it twice. I may try to get a refferal to an endodontist from a medical school clinic to save money. They say around 450 while other quotes are $1000-1500 just for the root canal.

It's impossible to say what's going on without seeing some x-rays. Maybe the root canal treatment has failed, maybe there's a crack appeared in the tooth. A specialist endodontist would seem like a sensible referral to me.

Thank you, I know it is hard to tell without seeing a x-ray. So it is only speculation. My dentist is a little gruff so asking these questions to him makes him think I am challenging him and he gets mad. I am not aggressive in my questions and even maybe a little meek, so it really isn't that I am being a jerk. I know I need another dentist.

The thing is when I went to him 2 years ago, he took an x-ray saw nothing and destroyed my crown because of my reported pain. He said he had no idea what happened. I am wondering if I should resist this if it happens on Friday morning, if by going to a specialist I there might be a way to save the crown that he won't see.

If it is infected, could that be a one time thing and could antibiotics take care of it?

Please help you could save my tooth! (he might suggest after this to take it out)

How about "I don't want you to touch my tooth, I would like a referral to a specialist endodontist". I should think that would pretty much take care of the issue.

So now the pain has diminished greatly, I am going to see if it gets better before I see anyone.
