      Question Dentists on this board

We're always looking for dentists who are happy to answer questions in an easy-to-understand, phobic-friendly way on this board! You don't need to ask permission to answer questions here, so if you fancy chiming in, please do !

      Our "resident" dentists:

In case you're reluctant to post here because you don't know who's going to answer your questions, here's some background info:

Gordon is Assistant Clinical Dental Director at NHS Highland (in Scotland). He works with both special needs patients and people with dental phobias. Gordon's hobbies include driving, trudging up and down hills, Mac computers and related gadgets, making pizzas, and spending time with his family and his dog (not necessarily in that order ). He loves Tuscany and Merlot. Best of all, he's a fellow phobic (not of dentists, luckily for him - imagine being scared of yourself all day long! - but of fish. You've heard correctly.)

Lincoln Hirst (username: drhirst) practices dentistry in the inaptly named "Beehive Dental Practice" in Welwyn Garden City, England. Lincoln qualified as a dentist as far back as 1988 (real photo or the marvels of Photoshop? Whatever the case may be, the result isn't half bad ). In his own words:

"Nothing gives me more satisfaction than helping dental phobics. I am happy to discuss your concerns on the telephone or by email prior to meeting."

      Awww....

Daniel Finkelman (username: Dr. Daniel) studied dentistry and psychology in Israel and moved to The Hague, Netherlands to treat people with dental phobia, using cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). His hobbies include music and movies. In the future, he wishes to also approach dentists and educate them on how to better deal with patients' fears.

Dr. Raymond Kimsey (username: comfortdentist) practices dentistry in Coral Gables, Florida. He specialises in treating dental phobics, people with gagging problems, and people who other dentists have a hard time getting numb. He also has a special interest in implant dentistry. He goes on yearly trips to the Dominican Republic treating people in need there.

Mike Gow (username: DrMike) works in Glasgow, Scotland, at the Berkeley Clinic. Actually, the fact that both Mike and Gordon are from Scotland is one big coincidence - I found Mike through his website www.whatfear.com. Scotland seems to be our lucky place! Mike enjoys working with anxious patients as he finds it very rewarding helping people overcome their fears. In his own words, "there is nothing quite like it!" Ahh, nothing like a bit of youthful enthusiasm .
Mike offers Nitrous Oxide (Inhalation) sedation, Intravenous sedation, oral sedation and hypnosis for anxious people, depending upon their needs. He also really enjoys using hypnosis for smoking cessation, nail biting, teeth grinding etc.
He has a Masters degree in Hypnosis Applied to Dentistry (University College London), and a Masters in Dental Anxiety Management from Edinburgh Uni. He is also doing lecturing and teaching to other dentists, doctors, and dental students in dental anxiety management and hypnosis. Oh, and he has also been busy writing up a lot of papers on dental anxiety management, hypnosis, etc. for various dental journals. And if that wasn't enough, he is also the founder of the International Society of Dental Anxiety Management, an organisation which will provide dentists with the opportunity to share their knowledge and ideas on dealing with dental fears.

Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his ever-growing family, sports and exploring his family tree.

Parsnip is also a dentist, whose identity and GDC registration number is known to me, but he prefers to remain anonymous .

Then there's Zzzdentist, who prefers to remain a masked hero, but during daylight hours is rumoured to practice general dentistry in Alberta, Canada... Zzzdentist is most likely a dentist, although I don't have absolute proof.

decan is a dental student in the U.S., who would rather remain anonymous (at least until he qualifies ).

Apologies if I have forgotten any regular contributors - please send me a PM and a short bio!
