3 weeks ago, I go to a general dentist(just moved so I don't have a regular dentist yet). She says she has to perform a root canal(4 canals), and will take 2 separate appointments. So she performs the fisrt 2 canals. Not even a single tiny pain:I was happily surprised. Then 4 days later comes the second appointment for the last 2 canals. Everything works fine until what seemed to me like the last portion and suddenly, coming out of nowhere, a sudden extremely sharp and intense pain!!!!! I jumped on the chair. The dentist was as surprised as me as I'm am usually REALLY calm during dental treatment and rarely feel much. She tells me that she does not understand because this is the easyest and least painful step of all. So she goes slowly and AGAIN the same pain!!!!!! She looks completly puzzled. She ask me: do you have metal in your body? I said no!!!! She's wordless and I am completly worried that she is blank on this situation. We both agree to put it to a rest and continue on a 3rd session. She explain to me that the step she's at is to put a small electric current in my canals to find out the depts of the canals. But she NEVER had a patient feeling anything at this stage and I am feeling intense pain....

Because of her "I have not cue what's hapenning" look, I'm thinking there is no chance I go back to her. I then discuss this to my father who is a doctor and he suggest me to see root canal specialist. So yesterday, 2 weeks later, I show up to that specialist but before I sit on the chair I ask his secretary to interogate my insurance company to make sure they reimburse the treatment because It was already partly done by the other dentist. But she says that they dont have the computer connection to do so. That I have to pay the 1200$ and have it reimbursed afterward. But that's the point, I do not have 1200$ to risk not to be reimbured. To add to the stress, the fist dentist had but something termporary to fill the hole in my tooth in the mean time. But about 4 days ago, I noticed iut was not there anyore. Now I have a giant hole in my tooth and I feel this is not an ideal situation!!!!!

I'm stuck!!!!!

Can you give me any advice?

So you were nice and numb and after awhile thhe anesthesia wore off all your dentist needs to do is to reinject you and proceed with your treatment.

Yes sounds like your dentist expects the LA to last forever and a day with never any need for top up. You'd be much better off getting an endo to finish the root canal anyway. Your Dad's advice was sound.

He did. Forgot to mention: I'm extremely resitant to anesthesia. At least twice normal dosage when not 3 times.

The maximum dose is something like 12 carpules for an adult but many dentists think they have done all they can before reaching that point. Appropriate technique and/or using a different local anaesthetic can be more important than amount given as well.
