There are other threads on this already - no point in starting a new one. I'll add some links in a minute.
If you are a dental student, look at the section for dental professionals and read the Common Fears which tells you everything you need to know along with solutions.
In a nutshell: Be nice to people, don't hurt them, do quality work in a relaxing comfortable environment and you won't go far wrong with the average patient.

It's the 21st Century.......dentistry can and should be painless but we patients come unstuck because all dentists are not created equal

This one replaces your question in the poll section.

I seem to mostly be afraid of being afraid.I have a healthy dislike of drugs, so today I bought a bottle of Rescue Remedy that I first heard of here on this site, and guess what, it works! I am planning to use it before I get my chipped and decayed molar removed next month.
Sometimes I get some irrational fear of choking or something stupid like that....I truly hate being such a wimp and a coward.![]()

Want to start by saying hello,
Total newbie here so if I am off track with anything please let me know.
I just had to join so I could reply to your thread.
Why do I fear the dentist?
Because I don't trust them any more.
I am at a crossroads because of my trust to dental specialist.
They never seem to talk to you with empathy. First question is always about method of payment & do you have insurance. You rely on your dentist to keep your best interest at heart. They know what statistics say about the potential outcome of any costly procedure but somehow I feel like I'm being sold into buying that used car that need to get off the lot.
For me it's about not only about being nice and kind but also careing alot about the patient and making Sure the procedure is as pain free as possible

ME TOO: I'm getting a molar removed in 10 days--first time. I think I have narrowed down my fear to my being afraid of my own anxiety. Even thought I am now convinced (after a lot of positive words from this site) that it will be quick AND PAINLESS. (Thank God for this site and the people on it!) I guess my biggest fear is how I may react at the time--and what I may do. My anxiety has waned down (for the most part) to mostly butterflies right now, but I'm sure it'll amp up once the time actually comes and I'm facing that fear in real time. Luckily for me, I never had a problem with a filling (once I had a couple and realized that Novicain is a wonderful drug). The drill didn't even bother me because it doesn't sound like a REAL DRILL and it didn't hurt--so I didn't care. The shots weren't fun but weren't that bad. So my biggest thing will be once my mouth is numb and the oral surgeon starts. I'm afraid of my anxiety RIGHT THEN. Again, and luckily, everyone says that's the fast part so I'm praying that my worst anxiety will only last seconds. Someone told me I won't have time for anxiety because it'll be over too soon.
Hmmm....you can find a way to make taking molds of our teeth and Rubber dams less "Hyperventilating"....and no needle numbing would be nice too...1 hour root canals, and lets see...get rid of those metal picks...use a q-tip instead.
