Hello everyone I am having second thoughts on having my oral surgeon place implant posts and instead have my periodontist do them . My periodontists also places implants but I was thinking since my oral surgeon specializes in the mouth and face it would be safer. He pulled an abcessed molar this week which leads me to the reason I am having second thoughts on him for my future implant coming up in a week. The reason I am having second thoughts is because this weeknd I was in alot of pain and also had alot of discomfort with the antibiotic that he prescribed and I have had a hard time reaching him to call me back and the when I finally got a call back he was rude and not too concerned with my needs and didnt make the effort I need. I am trying hard not to panic due to phobia of dentists tobegin with the thoght of more pain really scares me. Can you tell me your opinion on who would be better an oral surgeon or a periodontist that also does implants? Second Question: If I end up needing dentures later can these implant posts that I will have in already be used to hold down dentures?

The public is very confused over implant surgery. Implant dentistry including surgery is not a speciality. Years ago oral surgeons and periodontists didn't learn implants in their residentcies. Today and in recent years they do. General dentists who do general practice residentcies also learn implant dentistry including surgery. Now the question is who do you pick? Pick the individual not the specialist. I know of a oral surgeons who truely are "specialists" in implant dentistry. I also know of periodontists who do a fine job in implant
dentistry. And I will saw in general periodontists seem to know the restorative aspects of implant dentistry better than oral surgeons. As to general dentists the majority of the great "implantlogists" are general dentists who have a very strong interest in implants. In my town there is an oral surgeon who calls me up when he has a problem with implants.
Bottom line is investigate the person can the handle any additional implant treatment such as bone grafting, sinus lifting, ridge splitting,or do they just do the easier ones.
If you think you might need dentures then discuss this with the dentist so that your implant can be used to help support a denture.

RE: Comfortdentist, is there a such thing as a patient using the posts from an implant to support dentures later down the line or would they need mini implants instead?

You can absolutely use implants now to support a crown and later that same implant can be used to help hold in a denture. Part of patient care is planning for your patient's dentition long term. This is especially important when you reach that part of your life when you start to loose some teeth. For some people that happens early and for others it might happen at 80.
