I have had a tooth abscess for six weeks and have a curved root on that tooth. Therefore, I need to see an endodontist. The wait list for this specialist in the place I live is another 3 months. I have a visible pocket above the tooth . The antibiotics have not shrunk this ...i have stopped taking them as i was on them for a whole month. Should I be worried about waiting that long to see an endodontist? I have read that this can be dangerous, but I can't get in to the dentist any sooner. I am concerned.

To try put your mind at rest, I had an abscess for 20 months untreated, by dentist neglect not mine, in Sept last year I got a new dentist and I had about 6 or 7 courses of antibiotics up to Christmas. Although I felt very ill with the abscess, it has now been treated by root canal treatment, and I will have it crowned all been well later this year. So don't worry if it flares up again see the dentist for some more antibiotics until you can get to see the specialist. I hope this helps a bit.

Thanks...the pocket above the tooth is getting bigger and I was getting worried...I stopped taking antibiotics last week because 30 plus days on them is a lot...especially since doctors warn about the overuse of them...maybe I will get another script filled...th pus seems like it is ready to pop...maybe the antibiotics will help .

I know what you mean about the antibiotics and it has worried me taking so many, I never usually take anything, or I try not to. I always feel poorly on meds but I know how painful an abscess is and to keep it at bay needs must. What else can you do.

I had an emergency root canal today because the infection started to spread and I was swelling. I was scared to death, especially when the dentist said he couldn't give me anesthesia because of infection. However, it hurt only minimally and I feel sooooo much better now that the pressure is relieved!

What a relief, I bet thats what you are saying. Iam pleased you have got it sorted out now and you are out of pain.

WELL DONE :jump::jump::jump::jump::jump::jump::jump:

I don't know why he couldn't numb you, but that's why he is a dentist and I am not, all's well that ends well. Do you have to go back for a second part done, or are you done now?

:scared: I am glad it did not hurt you too much. Modern aneasthetics (maybe not always standard lidocaine) and techniques can get 'hot infected' teeth numb. I really do not understand why he thought it ok for you to have to sit through this without even trying any local aneasthetic.

It is possible that it could have been harder than usual to get the tooth numb but having an infection does not mean that local cannot be given which is what you said he said.
I understand that it was an emergency and that you had historically had a lot of antibiotics already but still this could have been a really scary experience for you which could have put you off returning for further treatment.

A bit of nitrous or other sedation would also have been useful if intervention were essential because of swelling and the pain could not be controlled.

I am sure the endodontist will be fine but maybe you need a new general dentist if he thinks it ok to skip the LA to this extent based presumably on his historic failure to get hot teeth numb. (There are advanced techniques which work).

Scary....I'll say ! o_O
