Default HELP! Massive problems after root canal

      hi,

Ok, so 3 weeks ago I finally went to the dentist after years of putting it off.
First thing we did was start a (very painful) root canal. Got an appointment for the next week to get it finished. Called them 2 days after due to severe pain and was told that is was normal so i left it at that and just took painkillers. The day for the finishing of the root canal came and I was looking forward to getting it done. The dentist gave me about 15 shots of anastechics and got started (no xray) and the pain I felt can not be explain, I had to stop him and cried for about 10 mins for the pain and I think the trauma. Dentist then took xray and could see the tooth was infected. He put in a temporary filling and sent me on my way with antibiotics, this is 10 days ago and it seems to be no better. I went back to dentist for a new prescription and am now experiencing severe pain, headache and stiffness in the neck!
      A few questions.
Did the dentist do something to make this problem worse?(is it normal)
and should i be worried about the head ache, stiff neck and the fact that after 10 days on antibiotics still have an infection? Bit scared it's gone to the jaw bone.
Additional info: Allergic to penicillin so of course not on that

      Thank you in advance.

      cecpill,

that sounds really awful! first, i can't believe that the dentist continued to work on you (both times) without you being completely numb! that is really not acceptable under any circumstances. i've had 2 root canals on teeth that are nearly impossible to get numb under most circumstances, but for the root canals i was completely numb b/c they can actually put LA right into the tooth. in terms of the pain, that does not sound normal based on anything i've ever heard. i'm not a dentist -- just another dental-phobe... i have heard of people being in some discomfort after RCT, but not the kind of pain you are describing. i would call the dentist ASAP and if he doesn't have a way to reach him in an emergency, you may need to go to the emergency room (not sure if you're in the US -- but this is what we would do here b/c at least they can assess for infection and treat the pain to get you through the weekend).

      take care of yourself!

      mikey boy,

no need to be scared of RCT. like i said above, i've had 2 (both on 2nd molars) with absolutely no problems. i had no pain afterwards and found them easier than a lot of fillings that i've had. a lot people on this forum have had similar experiences to what i've had.

and, cecpill -- i hope you're hanging in there. there's nothing worse than dental pain!
