I am posting this trying to help my girlfriend who is not very computer friendly let alone forum friendly. She went to a dentist today and it turns out she has an abscessed tooth, other teeth were loose, her gums are receding, and she has bone loss. The dentist is sending her to a specialist in the same building, gave her a RX for pain and nothing for the abscess. The dentists plan of treatment is to remove abscessed tooth, loose teeth, perform a deep cleaning which may not be good enough in which they would have to peel back the gums and shave the bone to prevent future bone loss. She is going to the specialist so the specialist and the dentist can work on treatment plan together. The dentist told her if they do not shave the bone she will continue to have bone loss and lose the rest of her teeth and end up with dentures. I do know that to much bone loss can make it near impossible to have dentures because a friend of mine currently can not have lower dentures due to too much bone loss. The dentist said that if the bone shaving is not needed after the deep cleaning
Our questions:
Is the shaving of the bone absolutely necessary? If not done can it lead to loss of other teeth and possibility of the bone loss going to the point where she can not have lower dentures. She is terrified of the dentist as am I. Right now she says no matter what she will not do the bone shaving, but if its a must any information you can give me on it will help me explain it to her better so she might have it done before to late...
