Default bone sticking out of gum

      Hello,

I quite worried and confused about what has been happening recently. Well, abt. 6 weeks ago I had my (bottom-right) wisedom tooth removed. After few days I "digged out" with a toothpick two peces of bone (which looked simillar to a cut nail). After that I starded feeling onother hard stuff that seemed to be pushing in the gum to get it's way out (everything happening on on the tongue side of jaw). This time however it was by the tooth before wisedom tooth (7th). I thought it must be one of these chips I got out before and tried to pull it out as well. In the effect a piece of bone (looks like a bone or a tooth) showed up. And it was much harder and much more "fixed" inside the gum (a photo enclosed). On the side of throat is feels sharp. It also hurts a lot when I push or put pressure on it. I went to my dentist yesterday and first of all he was convincing me that I has got nothing to do with the extraction (I'm not claiming that it's not truth as I'm not a specialist in this subject). When he looked at it he said that is is not a chip but it looks like a regular bone (maybe piece of jaw bone) or a tooth. He said however that he doesn't know and that he hasn't seen anything alike before. He also made an RTG which didn't show anything left in the gum after wisdom tooth axtraction - however as I mentioned that sticking out bone is by the tooth before wisdom and it's roots covered the spot so it was not possible to see what it is. He advised me to wait some time and if nothing gets better I should return to get a CT done to see what that is and how it could be removed.

I decided to ask here, since I'm a bit concerned that the dentist may not be 100% honest with me and he may be saying so so I dont blame him for anything (I wouldn't do it anyway, since I'm aware that somethimes things go wrong, but I would just like to know what is going on there and what should be done now).

I will be very gratefull for your sugestions and advices.

      Thank you.

      Hello fapers,
I'm not a dentist or an expert in any way but it may be a bone spur..I have one since my back right side wisdom tooth was extracted..the oral surgeon never mentioned it.About two weeks ago I had a sore tongue..so I went and looked into my mouth with a magnifying mirror to see what it was..I had a very bony bump on top of my gum and a sharp piece of bone protruding from the tongue side of my gums..Well today at my regular dentist I asked him to look at it and he said it was a bone spur and he could open up my gum, sand the bone down and sew the gum back up..I told him the oral surgeon said to leave it 6 months and see if the bone reformed itself..But since it is cutting my tongue the dentist advised it to be done soon..Does it cut your tongue? bone spurs are caused by tooth removal..Most do reshape but I guess some don't...Hope that is all it is..It is fixable...

      lillyh,

Thank you for reply. Thoug the edge of the bone is sharp, is quite deep in my mouth, so normally it shouldn't cut my tongue, but it does since it's difficult for me to keep my tongue away from it. I don't think that this thing could just disapear or heal by itself - it seems too big. When I study it closey it seems to by going from my 5th to nearly 7th tooth, and also it feels to by fixed/attached so I don't believe it could also be pulled out just like that....

I think bone spurs are attached to your jaw bone and need to be removed or sanded down by a dentist..My dentist said it wasn't that difficult to do. They numb your gums up , cut a small slit in them and sand down the bone and stitch you back up.. you can private message a dentist on here..they are very professional...

hello, i hope you check back on your thread because i am wondering what was the result, as i have a really similar issue at the moment?

i would like to know if you got it resolved OK.

i can't see any bone as clear as in your pictures, but i feel two separate bits of very bony feeling lump, just underneath the surface of the gum where my wisdom tooth was removed five days ago. it was an easy extraction though (not a new wisdom tooth, been there a while, I am 43 years old)

      thanks for any advice, reassurance
      Karen

Same thing is going on with me seen dentist yesterday and he told me to let it go he said it would be fine....however its cutting my tounge and it makes my jaw hurt pretty bad he said my gums would heal over it and if they don't within 2 weeks to go back in and he can either cut it out or grind it down.....I can see the bone it actually looks just like his pictures in my mouth thinking about going to another dentist for a second opinion!

Hi. I havn't been here for a while. Anyways, before going back to the dentist, I just pulled the thing out using tweezers and a needle and just disinfected it regularly afterwards for 2-3 days. It did hurt and bleed a lot, but the feeling of reliefe was worth it.

I have bone spurs by the dozen along my gums, inside upper and lower, outside upper and lower! I am suffering the most excruciating pain I've ever suffered. I have a treatment plan with my Dentist, just waiting on credit line. Here's the thing, I haven't had any teeth extracted! These are actual spurs growing on top of the bone and eventually bust through my gum. I've been able to break off the sharp points and the gum will heal over then, but some are length wise and aren't easy to break off, so now I am just suffering greatly! I've also been diagnosed as having moderate Periodontitis with infection inside pockets formed around my teeth. A few teeth even lost the gum around them, replaced with highly sensitive and extremely painful fibers resembling fingernails connected to the base of my teeth! Does anyone have such an issue?

I have twice had symptoms similar to those described by yourself and others in this thread. In both cases xray revealed nothing unusual and I thought they were possibly remnants of baby teeth. After a couple of weeks of fiddling and poking fragments broke away, some bleeding but the pain relieved and the gum soon healed.

After extensive research I concluded that the cause was 'lingual mandibular sequestration with ulceration', also called 'oral ulceration with bone sequestration'.

My dentist seemed not to know anything about it! In summary, disruption of the blood supply to the jaw causes the outer layer of bone to die and 'flake' off and eventually migrate to the surface of the gum. Google will offer you explanations with heaps of long words but for starters a comprehensible article with pictures here:
      http://www.rdhmag.com/articles/print...lceration.html

I found that brushing quite aggressively morning and evening with Savacol significantly reduced the pain and tenderness, and the bone fragments themselves reduced in size!?
I would love to hear of others experience with this particular problem...

Thanks, I'm having the same thing happen after a tooth extraction and hearing your (and other's) experience gives me relief. This is normal.
