Hi there
I had root canal work a year ago which, unfortunately, appears to have become infected, as I am getting a pain around the site of the surgery, as well as in my jaw and below my ear. Separately, I have an impacted wisdom tooth, which is not currently giving me problems but may do in future.
I have taken out private dental insurance, with a view to finding someone to investigate this issue, as well as to give my mouth the general once-over.
Unfortunately the first private dentist I visited, a widely acclaimed and positively reviewed practitioner, was surprisingly rough/careless in his handling of my mouth, and somewhat brusque in his manner. He suggested I needed dozens of fillings, but didn't notice any problem with the root canal site on his x-ray. I got the impression that this particular practice existed to make as much money as possible from clients.
I went for a second opinion at an NHS dentist, but the x-ray they took was the kind where the photographic film is placed behind the tooth. After it had developed, the dentist held it up to the light and declared me free of any problems whatsoever - a completely different diagnosis to the private guy! I'm not sure how accurate these tiny x-rays are when compared with modern imaging technology in detecting problems such as hairline cracks or abscesses, but was surprised at the entirely different analysis.
Basically I am looking for a London-based private (or indeed NHS) dentist that fulfills the following criteria:
• has an ultra-modern practice with the latest cutting-edge equipment (pardon the pun)
• the skillset to remove an infected root canal, clean out, replace and recrown
• the ethics to recommend any further treatment I might need, without suggesting unnecessary work
I would consider NHS dentists, but have not been to any in recent years which have instilled any great sense of confidence, sadly.
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Cheers.
