Hi
Following a few publications in their magazine 'Dentistry'- I have been added to an online list for people to vote for the top 50 most influential dentists in the UK!
I hope to get into the top 50 to raise the profile of dental phobia management within the profession (and it wouldn't do my ego any harm either! lol) (for the same reason- I am also soon entering a 'Dentist of the Year' competition).
It doesn't say anywhere- but I think it is meant for people in the dental industry (dentists, nurses, technicians, materials companies etc) to vote on- however if anyone wants to try to vote for me- just put 'dentalfearcentral' or something similar in the practice name/ company section! As a member of a dental forum they may accept any votes you cast! You do have to vote for 10 dentists to make the vote count however- and it is unlikely you will have heard of many of the others!

The link is: dentistry.co.uk/top50/

Many thanks and Kind Regards
Mike Gow

Cool - let's make a list of who else we could vote for...

What about Edmund/Edward Lynch the Heal ozone guy?

Whoever invented TheWand deserves a mention!

Some suggestions, including some of the people I voted for and a quick run down of who they are:

Nigel Robb-Nigel set up the Masters in Dental Anxiety Management at the University of Edinburgh. He has supervised me in the sedation clinic at the Glasgow Dental School recently during my studies, and is an excellent tutor and is very helpful and friendly. He is an excellent clinician and has helped thousands of people with a fear of dentistry to have their treatment under sedation- and taught hundreds of other dentists how to do the same. I have copied and pasted a brief cv: After graduating in Dentistry from the University of Edinburgh in 1982, Nigel Robb worked in Hospital posts until 1987. He then spent two years at Guys Dental School in a research post, which led to a PhD thesis on the Epidemiology of Toothwear. In 1989 Nigel moved to Newcastle as a Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry, and it was here he developed an interest in sedation. During his time at Newcastle he was involved in setting up the first Diploma in Conscious Sedation and was a founder member of the Dental Sedation Teachers' Group. In October 1998 Nigel was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry (Sedation), where he was responsible for co-ordinating the teaching of sedation in the dental school in Cardiff and in 2001 he took up the post of Senior Lecturer in Sedation in Relation to Dentistry in Glasgow. He is on the teaching faculty and the Council for SAAAD and is President of the Association of Dental Anaesthetists.

Cath Potter-Cath is currently a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Manchester Dental School (MSc course in the Control of Pain and Anxiety) and Senior Dental Officer for Salford PCT. She has previously worked in General Dental Practice, the CDS and the hospital dental service and has used hypnosis in all these settings for the benefit of her patients. She is a co-author of ‘Hypnosis and Communication in Dental Practice’, a book recently published by Quintessence. Cath is a genuinely nice person who helps alot of anxious/phobic patients and teaches other dentists how to do the same.

Lesley Barbenel- a Dentist ( University of London) who retired recently after working in the Glasgow Dental Hospital , which she joined in 1971. She worked mainly with anxious children- using her skills to help many of them accept treatment when othr dentists had failed. Her job also included teaching Paediatric Dentistry, to under and post graduate students. Lesley is the current President of the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis (Scotland) until March 08 when I take over the position.

Karen McPhail- Karen recently retired as a Community Dental Officer with NHS Lanarkshire, specialising in Paediatric Dentistry. She has been a member of BSMDH (Scotland) since 1989, having previously served on Council as Librarian and now Hon Treasurer. She is a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, Hypnosis & Psychosomatic Medicine section – Certified NLP Master Practioner, Certified TFT Dx Practitioner and Fellow of the Hypnotherapy Society UK and accredited Supervisor.

Philip Friel - I also work with Phil. Phil and I recently did some filming with BBC2 for a documentary due to be shown in March (I will let you know when!). Similar to the procedure I did with Abid- BBC2 filmed me using hypnosis to allow a patient to have 2 extractions and 2 implants placed with no local anaesthetics. Phil has recently had the honour of being asked to be a committee member for the Association of Dental Implantology UK. Phil has placed implants for my mum- he is an excellent clinician! (She did want the local anaesthetics though!! lol)

David Dunlop - I also work with David. David's nameis on the list. David teaches students at the Glasgow dental Hospital about denture construction. He has been asked to write a regular 'current topic' dental article for the Dentistry Scotland magazine. David is on the judging panel for one of the top dental awards ceremonies- judging best team, best receptionist, best smile week campaign etc.

Jamie Newlands- Dr Newlands is the head of the centre for Cerec excellence in Scotland which is based in The Berkeley Clinic. Dr Newlands underwent his postgraduate training in Cerec and advanced cosmetic dentistry in Londons Harley Street. He lectures internationally and has had several papers published on restorative and cosmetic dentistry. He also teaches at Glasgow Dental Hospital and School and is a member of the Royal College of Homeopathy.

Of course there is our own Gordon Laurie!

(Anyone who wants to know more about me and what I do- go to www.whatfear.com)

If I think of any others I will post them.

It would be great if some of the people involvedin anxiety management got a mention. As I said- I think it is such a big part of dentistry and well worthy of being recognised and made more high profile. I am very priviledged to be in a position to teach newly qualified dentists for a single session about anxiety management- during which time I try to get the message across. Hopefully it will instill a more caring attitude in the new generation of dentists coming through!

Cheers

Mike

When I had a peep at the list I was surprised not to see Jenny Pinder's name there but then I wondered, what do they mean by influential? Perhaps being a good dentist is not enough, perhaps they mean dentists who push themselves marketingwise, write papers and that sort of thing.

I think you are spot on- most of those on the list have published papers or teach and are therefore known by quite a few in the profession. It's not so much about being a good dentist as being a 'well known' dentist. Hence why I wanted to shake it up a bit with some of us 'good guys' hopefully attracting some votes! lol :)

having just watched Alternative Therapies on BBC2, I have to take my hat off to DrMike!! WOW! I have to say i was extremely impressed, though I did have to :hidesbehindsofa: when it got a bit graphic LOL And while your very willing patient was very calm and relaxed, and her pulse didnt alter when having the work done MINE DID!! I was leaping about the sofa holding, my mouth, pulse racing. Infact, I had to have a drink after it, just to steady my nerves LOL

It was fascinating and riviting to witness though, and I personally think you should be in the top 10 dentists, just for sheer guts at doing that on tv, a wee thought though, what if it had all went horribly wrong? EEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKK

thanks for your feedback!!

Obviously the patient wasn't anxious to begin with- as you will know- there is no way that would have worked with someone who was anxious or fearful of what was going to happen.
Remember- techniques such as these are good with some people, some of the time.
If she had been uncomfortable at any time- she would have had the local anaesthetic- it was ready on hand if needed! obviously it wasn't used however.

the media kind of missed the point that this demonstation was to show how powerful hypnosis can be, but that for most people it would be used to remove phobias, or reduce fear. in some cases it is used ALONG with local anaesthetics- to use it alone is something which is very rare indeed- and in fact only really indicated if the patient had true local anaesthtic allergies. the point of the demo was that- if it can be done with no local anaesthetic- imagine how powerful it would be if done WITH local anaesthetics. Hypnosis can reduce the need for GA, and (or at least reduce) sedation. Although the media missed these points a little- at least people will hopefully be more aware that there are more options out there for them than they thought!

Anyone who missed the programme you can still see it here for 6 days!
(Please be aware that the video does show some close ups of dental surgery including the removal of teeth and implant placement.) The dentistry is about 40 minutes in.

Kind Regards

I'm sure I saw something on a similar vein a whiloe back, and that was a vasectomy being done under hypnosis........ personally I dont see the need for that :devilish:

I think all in all the presenter did actually show the effectiveness of hypnosis in health related procedures. Compared to the hypnosis for entertainment, where I guess a majority of the subjects are a wee bitty extrovert(show offs LOL) and also have been consuming alcohol, and hypnosis in overcoming psychological issues( stress, smoking, weight loss etc), the most effective and conclusive use was in medicine ( the IBS study) and in dentistry. Also, there was no conclusive proof either for or against the use of hypnosis in overcoming the psychological issues.

It is certainly a fascinating subject, and I am sure it will be discussed in here in days to come, I would recommend veiwing it, but be prepared for the actual procedure:hidesbehindsofa:

I'm off for another >>> :sleepyjuice::sleepyjuice:

Yes - again I would emphasis that the film does show parts of the dental surgery. My mum came round to my house to watch it when it was on TV, and she looked away a couple of times! She was in a bit of a conflict- she wanted to see her son on TV but gets a bit squeemish watching medical things!
On the day, the presenter watched the procedure quite happily and didn't seem squeemish at all- the way it is edited makes it look like she is struggling watching what is happening. i think they obviously thought that it just made better tv, but sadly it can affect how the viewer feels when they watch what is happening. if you do watch it- remember, the patient IS totally comfortable to whole time, even if the presenter seems not to be!

I can't see it. :shame:

It says that this video can only be viewed in the UK.

As I suspected through the magic of Youtube- someone has copied it and put it up!
It is only the dental part of the documentary but you can see it here-

Again- please remember that this does show footage of someone having teeth removed and implants placed.

I've attached the published case report for anyone interested (this was the first draft to part2- some changes were made to final paper).

Again- Please note and be aware: there are photos included in these papers taken during the dental surgery- this journal is read by dentists who are used to seeing such images.

loved it, I may now have to come to Scotland, oh forgot already have my dentures and implants!
I really believe in alternative medicine, and this shows that it works. I see my chiropractic regularly and am thinking about seeing an acupuncturist for my continuing back pain.
Great video.

Great - I couldn't access it on the other link because of being outside the UK at the mo. Wow I just watched it...amazing but give me the local anyday! Didn't think it was particularly gory at all.

Wow pretty impressive :o! Had to reply to a text message though near the end of the video and missed a bit - were these immediate-loading?

yes they were immediate loading with temporary crowns.
actually we were disappointed as the temporaries were quite dark- not too noticable on the film though. you can see how great the final crowns look on the attached paper!
Again- this just shows what is possible- I would always want to use hypnosis AS WELL as local! Only in cases of allergy would hypnosis be considered alone. We did the demo to prove it could be done. the media obviously usually gets the wrong end of the stick- the story featured on the Scottish News and they said- that I offered hypnosis instead of anaesthetics for dental work- which isn't really true. never mind! at least it may help raise awareness of the possibilities available to help patients in some cases.
thanks for the positive feedback so far- i made the mistake of searching google- and found loads of cynical comments- at first i was going to post messages in my defense- but as they are on websites actually dedicated to 'skeptics' i thought- why bother- they will only try to wind me up and argue with me!!

That was absolutely amazing! I cringed when the teeth were coming out and to see her write a "0" completely floored me! I've always found hypnosis fascinating, even more so now that I've seen the video. Thank you for posting the Youtube version for those of across the pond!

Aaahhh, if only you worked in the states! ;)

Just to let you know- I came in placed 66th in that poll run by Dentistry Magazine!
