Hi all, I'm new to this site and wanted to ask some advice about an upcoming hospital appointment for an extraction.

I have a partially impacted upper premolar which I have been referred to the oral surgeon for because it may be near a sinus. My dentist was on the verge of taking it out himself and then changed his mind.
I am terrified of having to go to hospital and have either sedation or GA - I would much rather just have a local for it (weird, I know, but I just feel much more in control and at ease with local). My dentist said the extraction will be very easy and quick.

How common is it to just have a local for surgical extractions at hospital? Can I request this?

I don't really understand why the dentist said it is a very easy extraction and yet I need to go to hospital in the first place.Having never been to hospital I have no idea what to expect and I am really nervous over this.

Hi mokles
I went to hospital today for extractions under GA, but i was to scared to have it done ! but they did show me around to put my mind at ease next time, they were very understanding and looks like nothing to worry about, hospitals are off putting because they are so huge ! but the people who work there are very nice, if you are worried like me ask to be shown round im sure they will help you.

Good Luck:thumbsup:

You've been referred because of the sinus issue so I would have thought it would be possible to just have local if that is your preference. Do you have a consultation lined up? That would be where to discuss all this. I'm sure you would have some say in the matter.

With just local, I'd say the experience would be pretty similar to going to your usual dentist - you'd just have a more experienced surgeon removing the tooth.

Shouldn't be a problem getting it done with LA alone, most oral surgery units have big waiting lists for sedation/GA, so they'll be delighted to accommodate you on this one.

hi, thanks for your replies. :)
I am awaiting an appointment for a consultation to come through. I am just so scared of even going to the consultation incase they say they can't do it with just LA.
Are normal dentists not trained to deal with teeth near sinuses - is this the reason he has sent me to the oral surgeon? I am really confused as to why I have to go to the hospital, considering the dentist kept saying how easy an extraction it was.

I suppose it depends on the dentist. Personally I have no issue with removing teeth from near the sinus, but I've had a lot of surgical experience and can quite happily manage it if there's a problem.
Your dentist presumably does not feel that they can manage any problems properly and is doing the correct thing by sending you to a specialist.

There's nothing wrong with your dentist, not everyone can be good at everything and your dentist is probably miles better than I am at root canal treatment :)

Gordon, You sound like the sort of dentist I need, where are you based?? ;)
I was very put-off by my visit, my dentist didn't speak very good english and therefore didn't explain things to me properly (this was my first visit to this particular dentist after years of putting it off) :( so after that I feel even less confident about it all.

Sorry to hear that, as you know there is a bit of a shortage of dentists in the UK, some of the imports are very good, just their English is a bit lacking.
