Big appointment on Monday

Monday is my big appointment, scheduled for six hours. Since I will be getting IV sedation I have to take a taxi there and back.

I'm really anxious. I've had some difficulties with the dentist during the couple of prep visits, some misunderstandings and I'm still not convinced this is the right guy. But at this point I have no alternatives and must get the work done.

I really, really need this to be a positive experience. It's going to be really expensive (with the potential to be painfully expensive if he finds problems or decides to just take advantage of me) and it's only half the work I need. I'm leaving the other half for next year when I might have renewed dental insurance.

I don't want to regret this. I can see myself never going back to a dentist if this turns into a mess.

Appointment is tomorrow. I'm not completely freaking out but I am definitely anxious. I try to remind myself that it might actually go just fine. But that's now what I'm expecting.

I'm taking Tuesday off in anticipation of pain and unhappiness. But if not then I can take Tuesday to celebrate my first big step back to taking care of my teeth.

I've sat in the chair for over 6 hours before. (a few times in fact) I wish I could be there with you.

IV Sedation is good, the six hours will go by really fast just make sure you don't eat and don't "cheat" or you'll regret it when the sedation wears off.

He should not do any work you don't give him authorization for unless it is medically necessary - if you're concerned about the major deviations from plan, make sure you communicate that to him. That is actually very rare if he's a good dentist. If he does not seem sympathetic to your concerns, then you should be concerned. Like you said, if this experience isn't a good one, you won't go back - so make sure you stay in control of the things that are most important to you during this whole ordeal.

You'll be surprised how fast the six hours will go. Get some baby food, ensure drinks or some chicken brothy soup today that way if you're too sore to chew you can still get in some nutrition or food if you need pain meds. You'll be so happy to finally get it over with you won't notice the pain much once you get over the medicine head feeling that is-IV Sedation :sleepyjuice:

(I hit on my dentists when IV sedation starts wearing off...) which is hilarious because I'm usually not very nice to them before it kicks in.

Good luck for tomorrow!! I will be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way. I'm facing my extractions next month with IV sedation, so please post when you are up to it. I would love to know how it goes for you!!
I have done the same thing that Annajayne had suggested. I went out and bought some applesauce, puddings, broths, and Ensure in preparation for my big "E" day.
Good luck!

Good luck with your appointment tomorrow. Let us know how it goes, i'll be thinking of you. X :hug2:

I'm really looking forward to coming home afterward and saying "Wow. That was completely successful."

Of course even if it's only 51% successful that will be more than I've had over the last 15+ years. But it's not impossible that it will be 100% successful.

I'm trying really hard to not focus on how bad it could be, or how bad it has been in the past and being realistic that I have no reason to assume it will be bad. That's why I'm going to a specialist. That's why I'm getting the IV sedation.

I'm not typically a "think positive" person and it has cost me. Now's a good time to try it out! Thank you for the kind words.

You should be positive about this because i/v sedation is great, one minute they tell you you will be feeling sleepy and then the next you wake up with it all done.
