3 months ago I had a filling replaced on tooth #30, (it had separated). 2 weeks later my tooth starting hurting again...Dentist said that it was a large filling and will eventually need a crown. Crown prep was done 4 days ago on tooth #30. Since then, the tooth has been aching around the clock. This pain is not due to my bite. Went to Dentist yesterday and he said, looks fine just take Motrin. The 2nd part of the crown is scheduled for 2 weeks from now. This is keeping me up at night. I need to know:
1. What could cause this constant pain?
2. how long should this continue?
3. Could I need a root canal?

Thanks

Whoa boy! I would be very hesitant about placing a permanent crown on a tooth that's aching around the clock. This has come up before, and although there could be something I'm missing here, if the pain continues after the permanent crown goes on the crown might need to be removed or drilled through in order to do a root canal.

Remember though that this is "Internet Virtual Dentistry" and mostly fun and games since I haven't really seen you or your tooth, but something just doesn't feel quite right when I hear about a tooth that's keeping you up at night. Personally, I want to be cementing / bonding on crowns all day every day onto teeth that do not ache or make a peep, but maybe your dentist knows better.

Hopefully he's right and everything will settle down once the crown is on. Sometimes that can certainly be the case in some circumstances. You might want to get some reassurances before the permanent crown goes on that if it does need further work whether things will be taken care of for you.

I agree, no permanent crown until the pain is gone. I will go in to get an x-ray.

This is my 11th day on Motrin/Tylenol around the clock.
1. Can you please tell my why my tooth could still be hurting?
2. What are possible options at this point?
3. How long does it take for a tooth to "calm down"?
Thanks :(

I'm not a dental professional, but here are the things that IMO would be most likely:
1. the tooth may need root canal treatment
2. personally, I'd go and see an endodontist (specialist in root canals)
3. you may need antibiotics. These will kick in very quickly (a day or two at most) and cause the tooth to "calm down".

If it's hurting that badly there could be some irreversible damage to the nerve of the tooth making it not possible to settle down. The tooth needs to be assessed to see how it's doing, but if it's that bad the likelihood of a root canal is fairly high. Best to go have it double checked to see what's up.
