Hi Everyone

I have been obsessing over this site for the past few days trying to prepare myself, it's worked a little bit but im still soooo nervous! :(
I have my appointment made for Tuesday 3rd November to have 4 wisdom teeth out (2 lower impacted) with IV Sedation & Local Anaesthetic but im so scared of needles and i really panick. I feel alot more calm reading that people have said they dont remember anything with sedation but I'm worried about them sticking me in the hand first and if i will feel the injections in my mouth. I'm losing sleep already and i've still got 6 nights to go!

If anyone has any advice or can let me know what to expect i would really appreciate it, thank you in advance! :)

Oh an also sorry to be a pain but i have arranged to get 2 diazepam from my doctor to take 1 the night before so i can get some sleep and 1 in the morning but i dont know if it's a good idea to take the 1 in the morning as i'm having IV Sedation and i really don't want to affect it in any way. Im a big wuss!!!

Firstly, you are not a big wuss - I am!! There is NO ONE on this planet who has a bigger fear of extractions than me, so much so that a failed root filling had to come out and there was no way this was going to happen without filling me with drugs.

I referred to a special clinic that does IV sedation extractions and it was a total eye-opener. A small pinch in the back of the hand...count to ten...and I'm sitting in the next room with a hole where the tooth was. It is as easy as that!!

I had no memory, no feelings..nothing. I was suddenly in the next room wondering how I got here, and my face had a few LA's in which were given to me after the IV took effect. It was great. I just wanted to go home, pop a few painkillers before the LA wore off and go to sleep for the rest of the day.

Fantastic. I wish I could have IV for everything!!

Thanks for your reply GrahamDee :)
Before finding this site i thought i was the only one and that i was being a complete drama queen!
I just really hope it is how most people have said because a few people on here have said that the sedation doesnt always work as well if you get really worked up.
I hope thats not true because i will be far from calm when i step foot in the dentist surgery on Tues morning.
I hope i get the chance to post my success story and it doesnt go horribly wrong!! FINGERS CROSSED

Hi Emzy. I had three wisdom teeth out with IV sedation a few weeks ago and I was terrified and had put it off for years and years. I'm also very scared of needles, but the needle to put the IV in was over very quickly and then after that I don't remember ANYTHING until the nurse was escorting me to the recovery room. I actuallly didn't even realise it had happened at first and I thought that she would need to take me back in to finish it off! I was also surprised how little pain I experienced afterwards, and I was lucky enough to not get any swelling or bruising either. I was really very surprised at how easy the whole thing was, the sedation is wonderful. And even though I was very worked up leading up to my appointment to the point where I had trouble sleeping, by the time the day came around I almost felt calm, like a sense of acceptance or something, and the sedation worked brilliantly. I don't really know how or why that happened, though I'm sure there's some kind of psychological reason for it. All the best and keep reading the success stories on here, it definitely helps!

Hi Emzy! There are so many of us who had or still have that fear so you are definitely NOT alone. I been under IV sedation before for extractions and had no problems at all with it. It felt like I had taken a short nap .... woke up and everything was over with. It was great! I had to have 16 teeth pulled less than 3 months ago and couldn't afford IV sedation. I was like you...scared to death. I didn't think I would be able to sit thru the appointment. But I did use oral sedation (halcion...one tab the night before and again one hour before the appointment)...it didn't knock me out but it did relax me enough to the point where I didn't have a care in the world. I was alert thru the entire procedure and felt NO pain from the shots or extractions! I think you should take that diazepam. You're going to be just fine, Emzy....please post an update for us when you're all done.

Sally

Thank you to everyone who has replied
Its the BIG day tomorrow and the nerves are definately kicking in!
I really can't wait for it to all be over but i also really don't want tomorrow to come.
Its exactly 24hrs and 17mins until my appointment (i can't think of anything else :scared:)
I just hope the diazepam calms me enough so i can sit in the chair and let him put the needles in my hand and mouth

Any last words of support would be really helpful as im going to print this post off to take with me for comfort

~x~

Hello Emzy! The 'waiting' was always the hardest part for me. It always had me fearing the worst and breathing a sigh of relief when it was all over with. The diazepam should relax you enough to not panic. And you probably won't get any of the local anesthetic until you are out of it already. You're going to do just fine.

Sally

Thanks Sally u have been a big help and i will be sure to let u know how i get on.
I will be reading this until he calls my name tomorrow morning

Just before I had my IV, I was a total physical and emotional wreck. I nearly had to be helped down to the surgery. The aneathetist even came looking for me and the women on reception were seriously wondering if I was okay.

I never slept for a week before hand. I was counting down every second in abject sheer terror. To be honest, there have been few times in my life when I have been as terrified as that.

I cannot express the amount of relief I felt when it all it came down to was sit in the chair and a quick scratch later, it was all over. Done and finished. And all I had was how stupid and embarassed I felt with myself having got myself in a right mess to start with.

Of course, its easy to write this now, but then it was a major step into the unknown - and that is really all there is to worry about.

I am going to be absloutley truthful and honest here - the absolute worse thing you have to worry about is the waiting. Getting IV and having a tooth pulled is the easy part and thats simply you will not remember any of it.

You will do fine. Trust me. I have been there.

You can do it!!!
I haven't had my wisdom teeth removed (yet!) but I was put under for 4 other extractions. I'm very scared of needles and doctors ALWAYS have trouble finding my veins but I was fine! When I came round I was hysterical though (in relief!)

Don't worry! You'll be fine and you definitely aren't a wuss or the only one! We'll all be here for you when its over!
A just keep repeating to yourself. It's almost over... It's almost over! You won't ever have to worry about it again! :XXLhug:

Well today is the day and guess what! I have a sore throat and a cough just to top it off. I am waiting until 9am when the surgery opens to see if i can still have it done! Even though i would really love not to have to go through with, i know i have to and i dont want to wait any longer feelin worried all the time, i just want it over!! I think im cursed

You are not cursed - you are just human. We have all been there and gone through it all and I know you will to and will feel all the better for it once its over.

Well i did it and feel so much better now that i know i will never have to do it again.
The procedure was the easy part, i only remember them saying that the 1st tooth was out an the rest i dont remember and it all seemed so fast.
I have just spent today sleeping off the sedation and watching a couple of films.
I feel great apart from an aching jaw and abit of swelling but not much.
I will post my story in more detail in 'success stories' in the hope i can help someone else like u have all helped me :)

Glad you got through it. Things will start getting better now its over.

Well done!!

:yay:
