I finally got myself to visit the dentist after about 9 years of absence
![]() I think my biggest fear was the embarrassment factor, one tooth chipped and i didnt get it sorted out straight away and so on. Eventually I had 4 molars at the bottom totally gone down to the gum which every so often would develop an infection which i chose to deal with myself! I also had a chip in one incisor (not sure if thats the right name) so i have been hiding my smile for years now On monday i developed a really bad tooth ache on the left side and bared with it for 2 days Anyway on Wednesday I went down on recommendation from a friend to this really awesome dentist. One of the plusses was that he had a website where he shows that he takes into consideration phobias etc etc. This actually made me eventually go Sitting nervous as hell on the chair not knowing what would happen he came in and really relaxed me in conversation it was uncanny!! I told him what happened, and when last i came to a dentist and he didnt even bat an eye lid ![]() Down to business he took a look at the problem and straight away said that he will have to extract the remaining roots of the 2 bad molars on that side. I got a bit anxious and images of huge plyers etc flashed in my head and I guess he saw me and explained the whole procedure and how it will really hurt him more than me lol. He then applied the topical gel, and while waiting casually inquired about my eating habbits, smoking, drinking etc etc Not once did i feel the embarrassment i feared and it felt quite good actually talking to someone about it finally! Once the gel had taken effect he injected me in a few places, asking me all the time weather i could feel it. (We developed a hand signal system as talking was obviously hard lol) After a few mins he used some tool to poke certain area's and ask me if i feel anything which some were still not totally numb (he explained the infection could cause this) In the end after 3 sets of injections (ALL totally painless) we decided i was sufficiently numb. I couldn't feel much so not sure how they did it but in the end it took about 45 mins to extract the 2 sets of roots and clean away the scar tissue (he explained that if we do any implants its easier to make sure things are clean etc now) He then explained everything i should avoid, asprin etc (for the bleeding) and how to brush and rinse while the stitches(just to stop the excess gum from flapping around lol) are in We have now booked for Thursday next week to get the stitches out and do a full consultation on a game plan to get all my teeth fixed up. I feel really motivated and am counting the days till i can smile openly again ![]() Its a pitty i only found this forum/site after i had been, but I have still found the info really use full ![]() |

Well done you.
I have yet to make that first appointment (((shudder)))) However, I have found that reading the journals is very helpful. |

Great Job Jared!!!
Fear of the unknown is the worst part and then overcoming that fear is the next step. Sounds like you were successful on both counts. WOO HOO! Trish |
