      Important Forum Rules and Guidelines

Welcome to our dental phobia forum ! In order to keep this forum on track and to make it a friendly place, we ask you to follow these rules and guidelines:

This is a forum for people who are (or have been) affected by severe fear or phobia of the dentist (unless you are a dental professional wanting to help). If this isn't the case for you and you have a dental question, either use a general dentistry forum instead (for a list, see here: Dental Forums ), or post your question in our General Dental Forum. The "Ask a Dentist" section is reserved for people who are currently or have in the past been suffering with severe dental anxiety, fears or phobias. You will need to have made at least one post in order to start a thread in the "Your Dentistry Questions Answered" forum in the "Ask a Dentist" section. Please note that posts may be moved to the general "General Dental Forum" if it is unclear whether you are (or have been) affected by severe fear or phobia of the dentist.

No personal attacks on other members (including innuendo) or private vendettas

No requests for free dental work or links to fundraising websites like gofundme or similar

No fetishist posts (e.g. dentures fetishists, GA fetishists)

      No pornography

      No scare tactics

No quackery (e.g. Weston Price/root canal cover-up/holistic dentistry)

      No spam

No posts which condone the use of force or restraint

Obscene, racist, ageist, disablist, homophobic or transphobic language may be deleted. Swearwords are allowed, within reason.

Commercial posts need to be approved first (e-mail

Please try and post in the appropriate sections of this forum. Double posts (the same or very similar posts) in more than one section will be deleted.

If you start a thread in the support and journal section, please provide updates by replying to the thread, rather than starting a new thread! This will make it much easier for other members to follow your story.

Dentistry is not mandatory. Please try and avoid putting pressure on anyone. Everyone has the right to go at their own pace, and also the right not to see a dentist.

This is an open forum, and is indexed by search engines such as Google. Do not use your real name on these forums or give away details which would allow other people to identify who you are, unless you are absolutely sure you don't mind.

If you feel the need to change your username, please contact an administrator via PM and/or email and we can change it for you. Please note that we don't delete posts upon request unless there have been no replies by other posters. This is to ensure that people who have taken the time and effort to reply will not have their work taken out of context and rendered meaningless. We are however happy to edit any personal details or descriptions which could identify you.

Don't use your e-mail address or phone number on these forums.

To avoid confusion, we don't allow multiple user accounts. We reserve the right to merge multiple user accounts.

We want you to feel safe here. If you receive any PMs from other members which strike you as odd or inappropriate, don't hesitate to contact the adminstrators, or e-mail

You can find our privacy policy here:

Could everyone please take great care when considering posting dentistry related images or videos, particularly when they are of a graphic nature (e.g. pictures of teeth, dental instruments, dental surgeries etc.), including animated videos. Many people who visit this forum are at a stage where they can't cope with things like toothbrush commercials, so it would be hugely appreciated if any images are kept as non-graphic as possible.

Pictures of the inside of your mouth which are poste
d for reference when asking questions in Your Dentistry Questions Answered can be helpful as they can help others to give you information and/or advice. However, not everyone who visits the forum is at a stage where they can cope with seeing such imagery, so bear this in mind when posting.

If you wish to post images of your mouth in order to seek advice from one of our forum dentists or other members, we ask that you post these in Your Dentistry Questions Answered and not in Support or any other section.

Any images or videos which are considered to be overly graphic or frightening to some viewers may be removed.

Private Messages (PMs) can be a useful tool for connecting with people in similar situations or even to develop friendships. However, please do not send PMs:

      (1) for unsolicited advertising
      (2) if they may constitute unrequested spam
      (3) of a sexual nature, or with the intention of entering into a romantic relationship with another member
      (4) of a fetishist nature
      (5) to multiple recipients, especially repeatedly, for example with questions that have already been asked by you on the forum
      (6) which may upset the recipient(s).

The administrators reserve the right to ban members who grossly misuse the PM system, or in the case of (5), (6) (and (3) - depending on the nature of the messages - to disable their PM system.

      Under 16? Please read this!

Dental Fear Central is a website targeted at people age 16 and over.

However, we do welcome people aged 13 and over - if you are under 16, congratulations for taking control at such a young age !

Here are some hints and tips for safe forum use which you should follow:

Remember that everything is on the forum is public - always use a pseudonym (fake name) instead of your real name! If you accidentally use your real name when registering, send a private message to a member of the forum staff, or use this form: - we can then change your username.

Likewise, if you say anything in your posts which contains information that could identify you (e.g. where you live, names of friends or family members etc.), don't hesitate to contact us so we can edit your post(s)!

Do not give out specific information about where you live. PM forum staff if you have any concerns about info you have posted.

If you are concerned about anything directed at you from other forum members (e.g. if you receive an unsolicited private message), contact the forum staff or use this link:

      1) Think carefully about whether you want to reveal your identity (even if this just your email address). As a general rule it is probably best that research be anonymous but if details are required ensure that they fall under the Data Protection Act.

      2) Research is valuable and important, but depending on the nature of the research, it can also be a strain on participants. Always be sure that you are feeling in a good enough place at the time that you get involved.

      3) If you have any doubts at all about any aspect of the research then ASK either publicly in the Forum or use the Contact Us Form at
