I am in need of having 25 teeth extracted , my dental surgeon said he could do it quickly with giving me a valium to take before an novacaine to numb me , or I can be sent to the hospital to be put to sleep but will have to wait one an a half months for that , I am curious if any one can shed light on being awake for this as I can have it done in a couple weeks in office opposed to waiting almost two months to be put to sleep , thanks, also I am a big chicken of being awake for this but am tired of the pain from my teeth , they are very bad , some broken at the him line an a couple broken just above , a couple at cracked also

Hi Roger,

there are three things to endure when it comes to extractions: the time it takes, the noise and the pressure so the question is do you feel up to cope with those things.

When it comes to duration, extractions are one of the quickest procedures and tooth broken at the gumline are even easier to remove than teeth that are still complete. You should trust your surgeon if he says that he can do it quickly - after all he had seen your mouth and knows his abilities.

You will get numbed for the procedure so there won't be any pain involved, all you will feel is a pressure.

What might be unpleasant is the noise as a tooth can crack. This again, won't cause you pain, but the sound can be scary. It might be a good idea to bring ear buds with you to distract yourself.

Valium is supposed to relax you so that will also help. Have you had valium before and if so, how did it feel for you?

All the best wishes

I recently had all my bottom teeth pulled. My dentist numbed me to death, I brought my iPhone to listen to music and got sweet air. It was over in no time. A little pressure bit when he told me they weee all oullled I couldn’t believe it.

Thanks for the reply , yes I have had valium before an it actually made me feel drowsy , having to wait almost 2 months to be put to sleep has me reconsidering an thinking to have the date cancelled an just to let my dentist do it in office with the novacaine , had a bad experience with an extraction before an felt pain when the tooth was extracted , that has me second guessing this procedure as this time it will be all my remaining teeth and I really do not want to feel any pain

Sorry to hear about your painful extraction in the past. A good numbing is the basis duty of every dentist, painful treatment is a no-no nowadays (as brit says in her signature - it's 21st century.. dentistry can and should be painless). So please talk to your dentist about this and make it clear that he should double check if you are numb. Also, should you notice that you are not entirely numb, let your dentist know so that he can numb you up more. I'm always sorry to hear stories about painful treatments, especially as it makes people believe that painful dentistry is normal, which is just not true. Pain during a treatment simply means that the dentist failed.
All the best wishes and keep us posted.

Update: I called my dentist to see if we could cancell the hospital surgery date. To my surprise the DDS who answered my call told me that they strongly urge that I wait to have it done at the hospital as I will be having alot of work done , with the extractions I will also be having calcium deposits under my gum below my bottom teeth grinded down as I was told they would make my denture fit wrong if not taken care of , after being told initially that it could be done in office if I chose quickly , I was told I could still have it done in office but urged to wait for the surgery date as I would be more comfortable? Any replies will be great

hi roger,

i had 15 extracted in june. most were loose due to periodontitis and came out easily, but the whole thing took 3 hours because i had several abscesses that needed to be cleaned out and then i had bone grafts placed in most of the sockets. they did the tops first and then let me get up and walk around and take a bathroom break.

i didn't have any sedation or even pills, so i was very aware of all the drilling and suturing and pressure...never any pain though, and if i started to feel anything and said something my dentist immediately gave me more numbing shots. it wasn't fun at all, of course, but i did ok and it was WAY less worse than my imagination thought it'd be.

i did talk to my dentist beforehand b/c i was scared that 15 was a lot to do at once, especially without any type of sedation, but i said if he thought it'd be ok then i would trust him, and i guess he was right.

Update: Had surgery yesterday , was pretty at ease about it , especially after getting meds in my iv to relax me ?, got wheeled in to OR an took a few deep breaths an woke up with my dentures in an to my surprise not in much pain at all , hardly any swelling , very little bleeding also, after getting home still very little pain even now on day after , just have to get use to all these teeth in my mouth now !! Cant wait until I am able to eat solid foods again , all in all let anxiety get to me before the surgery day just to find out it was soooo easy an very little pain , went to dentist for rinse out today an back in 1 week for check up an alignment if needed , told to leave dentures in all the time except for to take them out an clean them as it will help them align with my gums better , very happy with my new smile !!!!

Thats great news, Roger, very well done! :jump: :jump: :jump:
Glad it all went well, recover soon!

Oh wow well done, I have mine being done in 8 days time.. next Friday. I’m getting very very nervous about it, but I’m so happy it’s all worked out well for you.

Hi Roxy , will you be put under general anesthesia or local with novacaine?

I’m afraid it will just be local, I think that’s why I’m so scared. If I was asleep I don’t think I would be as worried ?

Hey Roger, it’s been a nightmare I’m afraid, have a look at my post.. denture doesn’t fit!! There’s no words to describe how upset I have been. However I’m so pleased you are doing well. I know I will be ok too, but they need to make things right for me.

The extractions were ok actually, the injections were nasty, but my gums are doing well and the pain hasn’t been so bad.. I just feel a little down unfortunately because of the denture .. it’ll be ok though x
