Hi Everyone

I have posted before about my conditions and problems with my mouth and jaw off and on the past few months but now im still in agony and its gotten worse and im beyond my wits end and so is my family so im going to tell you in detail what ive been through, when it started and all of my pains.

First, in October of 2013 i had a tooth extracted that was causing me agony and it turned out it was abscessed due to a faulty filling. so until around november, i had no teeth pain, then i had more tooth aches. i did have the best mouth and hadnt brushed often as i should so when i went back to the dentist he said i needed two root canals and a deep filling in my painful teeth. so i had the teeth extracted since i couldnt afford a root canal and had the tooth filled in early december. well that one started throbbing after the filling. went back, he tested it and it needed two root canals so again i had it extracted. on december 30th, i had a full dental check up which i was told i had 12 cavities, gingivitis, i needed a full mouth debridement (root scalling and deep cleaning), and i had an slightly impacted wisdom tooth on my lower right that needed to be pulled. (side note: before all of this i already had 2 permantant and 1 wisdom tooth pulled that got infected and one cracked.) So i made the appointment to get the wisdom tooth pulled. before i did i had another tooth pulled that was causing pain and then right before i had the wisdom tooth pulled it was causing me terrible tooth pain. well the extraction was quick and went well. i got stitched up and sent home. i did end up getting a dry socket as i got woken up several times with severe burning and agony in the extraction site which i kept clean. after that i started getting my teeth filled a little at a time including a deep filling with a indirect pulp cap. well once i started filling my teeth, thats when the nightmare of pain started. i still had the terrible burning in my face where the wisdom tooth was and i still do, i started getting terrible jaw pain and more tooth aches despite all cavity filled teeth being filled and terrible face pain and ear aches and head aches off and on. i had the debridement done and tooth cleaning. hygenist told me gingivitis was clearing up but i still needed to keep gums clean and that i had some bone loss but not a lot and some gum recession but not a lot. at this time, i discovered i was clenching my teeth at night. i got a over the counter mouth guard which was very uncomfortable and started hurting my teeth including my deep filled one. the deep filled tooth (number 3) has NEVER throbbed but has been sensitivite since being filled 4 months ago and i cannot eat on it. one of my shallow filled teeth (number 13) had a sharp pain when i bit down on some chicken 3 days after it being filled but it never hurt again biting on it, however, that tooth has been hurting off and on since whenever i chew but its not sharp, and when i bite on it it sometimes hurts but not sharp and yes it sensitive to cold sometimes heat and sometimes sweet but not all the time. most of the time i have no pain and sometimes ill get a sharp pain without stimuli in the tooth directly which i suspect is the result cause i clench on it and think it could be a sprained tooth. also teeth that have no cavities or meet with any other teeth when biting due to missing teeth, sometimes hurt which my specialist told me its most likely referred pain from face and jaw problems. so, i went to two different tmj specialist both said my jaw is not that bad but im still having terrible toothaches, face pain, jaw pain, headaches (BUT not all the time), sometimes i get just jaw gum and face pain without headaches or neck aches or ear aches. ive also had a sinus infection in april then i keep getting terrible sinus pain off and on without any sinus infection. ive been x rayed recently twice by aspen dental, an endodontist both said nothing wrong with teeth and no infections they could see, but im still having terrible throbbing on my right temple, face pain even with massaging and heat and ice. i can open jaw wide sometimes, sometimes not. the pain has never gone away at all. ive had days with no jaw pain but still had tooth or face pain. ive been placed on antibiotics three times, currently on some now and im still in pain. i brush everyday with sensodyne and rinse with floruide mouth rinse. in early july my jaw got worse as i think the mouth guard was fitted wrong and my jaw was terribly achy whenever i chewed. sometimes my front bottom teeth hurt when i chew and sometimes my gums hurt terribly. today, i am in terrible face, jaw and minor tooth discomfort but i can open my jaw pretty good and no headaches today. i also get terrible sharp throbining in my face and upper jaws which does not feel like tmj. today my eye was twitching after rinising. my upper molars which includes the deep filling tooth, hurt back of my jaw whenever i brush them, gums are painful in only a couple areas when i brush them but no bleeding. i have cut my gums and roof eating. also it feels like my bone in my upper jaw and roof hurts and it even throbs. whenever it throbs tooth 13 starts hurting bad then it stops and disappears. so i dont know what else to do. i cant live like this. ive lost 35lbs, i cant enjoy life, im doing relaxation exercisies, physical therapy include tens unit and dry needling didnt work, so im desperate now for any kind of relief. i thought it may be an abscess but im not constantly running a fever, hadnt thrown up or been nautious, ive had swelling in my face and jaw but not excrutianing toothaches, i hadnt seen an pus pockets in mouth or gums, gums appear to be pinker and seem to be healing. all of my dentist and specialist are at a lost. weve contacted a dental school just waiting to hear back but if anyone on here has any idea what is causing my pain, ill forever be in your debt. thank you

Update. Face is now swollen on both sides and I have a terrible burning tightness in my face. Jaw cracks and pops when I open mouth and I sometimes gave pain on upper left jaw when I open my mouth sometimes not but my face pain is chronic. Going to emergency dental to see if it's an infection.

Another update, I had tooth pulled but I'm still having terrible face and jaw pain on both sides of my face, sometimes it feels like tmj sometimes i have no jaw pain but the face pain is there still and even in my gums. It feels like it travels. I hope to god it's not an infection and that I pulled the wrong tooth! Now I'm worried it is an infection since the pain has not gotten any better and I'm on antibiotics for a week now but none of my teeth are throbbing or constant it's mostly been referred pain or interminit tooth aches. I don't know what else to do. I've seen countless dentist specialist all x rays say no infection no problems. I'm crying typing this. I don't know what else to do.

another update:

still having face and jaw pain on both sides even with antibiotics and pulled tooth. i also do clench my teeth sometimes during the day and at night but i hadnt for a while cause i hadnt had any morning headaches or toothaches however, one upper premolar number 13 has been causing me terrible face pain and interminttent toothaches. its like a sharp twinge then nothing. this has been on going for months. ive seen an endodontist about it and he said theres no evidence it needs a root canal, recently had a dental visit and despite being in terrible face and jaw pain they found nothing wrong with my teeth except for a couple cavities, one needed a root canal which i just had pulled (deep filling) but other then that nothing. so im wondering if i could of sprained the periodontal ligament as there are no molars next to that tooth and that tooth i do clench on quite a lot and chew mostly with that said. could that be causing my face and tooth pain?

I'm so sorry to hear about all of your pain issues. I am not a dentist, but I suffer from Trigeminal Neuralgia, and that's exactly what it sounds like you have. :( Please read up on it, and if you feel that best describes your issues, see a neurologist. It's horribly painful, and many people lose teeth (extractions) because it feels very much like a bad tooth. Including me.

Thank you! yeah my boyfriend mom and i all think i may have this on top of tmj. it could also be a sprained tooth. my cold sensitivity only last less than 10 seconds when i eat cold food. i sometimes i have gum pain sharp when i rinse with warm salt water and the pain does seem to travel. i wonder what it is. i dont think the tooth is dead it doesnt look dark, it doesnt hurt to bite down on it. it has a dull ache sometimes from my clenching but nothing sharp or severe. dont know. may go get it re checked to be sure. but thanks for your reply. were going to go to a dentist school and see what they say. they have mri equipment just got to get a hold of them.

Another update: I had terrible sinus pressure in upper tooth that has been hurting but sinus meds stopped that and i had terrible face and tooth pain in my upper left side all day until later this afternoon its now all on the bottom with the same pain ive been having and both top and bottom give me sharp interminit pains and earlier, it hurt to chew on my top side, now it hurt to chew on my bottom. i read this is a result from clenching or could be a cracked tooth but i have no sharp pain, i do have pain to cold but it doesnt last long, warm water sometimes hurt but it doesnt last long. jaw still hurts slightly when i open it but not as bad and no tmj pain. not much. so is this an infection, tmj, trigminal nerualgia, bruxisim or all three? its very confusing. side note, i am on antibiotics and im still having pain. almost the same. same happened the last couple times dentist gave me anitbiotics. was still in pain and it never had swollen gums or fever any of the times. only fever i had was from a sinus infection and cold i had back in june but the pain was not intense. ive had abscessed teeth before and this pain isnt anywhere NEAR as bad as that. Also, the dental school contacted us and will set up an appointment in about a week and said they can test for trigminial nerualgia which they think is what it is but i def have tmj according to their reports. also they think my tooth pain since i do clench could be a sprained tooth. so we shall see. ill keep everyone updated.

another update. we found this tmj specialist who is very in depth in finding whats going on. one of my back molars which was not a deep filling has been hurting on the right side of my mouth a little when i push on it and my jaw hurts when i chew on that side and so does the tooth. the left side hurts in my upper face and jaw when i chew, cold stuff hurts bottom teeth when i chew and causes lower jaw pain. not sure whats going on but jaw and face pain keep going from burning to constant aching. chewing is painful. brushing some of my teeth are panful. some of my gums are sore above one of my clenching teeth.

we found this tmj specalist who im seeing Thursday which i think may help me as i was told he is really good and he got really good reviews. i however do not think i have just tmj. i dont even think i have never pain. i think there is something wrong with my upper molar on the right side as it hurts when i push on it and it causes my face to burn more and my face and jaw have hurt not stop since feb. plus my jaw does hurt to open wide and yawn but its not stiff or locking and warm doesnt help. i think its the tooth causing my jaw pain. now my left side im sure its tmj as it clicks pops whenever i open it and the joint hurts most of the time as does when i push it and so do my face muscles and i do get frequent headaches and ear aches too. but ill let everyone know what he says thursday.

Went to specialist and he said my bite is def off cause of my missing teeth. He said my face muscles are possibly torn and are damaged he made me a cast fora ssplint to stabalize the bite. All my teeth were sensitive when they made the cast as it was very cold. My upper molar which had a normal filling and is a tooth i have not bit on, hurts to push it, sensitive to tap, causes some jaw pain, i have terrible constant burning in my right side of my face, hurts to brush, feltloose earlier, gums hurt around it but its not throbbing, and did not have a deep filling. Its also causing my neck to hurt. Pain is radiating from face to neck. jaw still pops when i open it but the dentist said he couldnt hear it with stethoscopebut i sure can. Even when i dont have a tmj flare up my face hurts and most of my teeth are ssensitive. Again any help would be appreciated

went to emergency dentist cause my face was swelling and burning and he x rayed tooth said no infection but my gum pockets were 5mm and i do have periodontal disease so he gave me this rx mouth rinse and told me to get a deep cleaning asap. now im sick and have a sore throat, stuffy nose, congestion, swollen cheeks and face and more jaw sick like pain. pretty sure its a sinus infection or cold as i do not have an abscess. doctor is making me a mouth splint to correct my bite and told me my jaw muscles are really inflamed and probably damaged. ill keep everyone updated.

right side of my face has gotten worse. its swollen really bad, my gums are red painful and inflamed, my headaches are coming back, jaw is worse, face is burning, worse pain ive been in the past few months. going to dentist thursday for mouth splint fitting and they know about my swelling and pain and will address it on thursday. i dont understand. ive been brushing twice a day with sensodyne and flouride mouth rinse, warm salt water every now and then, i floss everyday, i now use a water pick so i have no idea why id even have an abscess or why my face and teeth should still be hurting 7 months later when my x rays show nothing wrong....

back from dentist. he said that my bite is completely off and got really screwed up once the wisdom tooth was removed. only i think 2-3 of my teeth are touching and one i clench on. the tooth i thought was cracked was actually just sprained. he said the periodontal ligament is damaged and all the burning ive been feeling and sharp pain in my face has been from my muscles and bad bite. im currently wearing a mouth splint he made for me that fits like a retainer, but only my bottom teeth are biting on it. its a bit uncomfortable cause i got to get used to it to help my bite but the pain is less then what it was. theres no way i can clench based on how he made this. i have to go back on tuesday to see if its working if not then ill prob need an mri/cat scan and possible jaw surgery so we will see what happens. and i didnt know bad bites can cause sinus problems. he told me cause my front teeth didnt grow in straight and cause i sucked my thumb, cause the bite to be off and since i was using all of my biting to bite on the impacted wisdom tooth which was not what i was suppose to be doing, when it and the tooth next to it was removed, my bite got messed up. so i have a very severe case of tmj, periodontal disease which ill be getting a deep cleaning tuesday as well, a couple small cavities in my front teeth but nothing that should be causing the pain im having, and he told me bad bite, tmj and clenching can all cause sensitivty to not only cold but hot as well but theres no cavities or anything wrong with the roots of my teeth. no deep decay so thats whats going on. im hoping i dont need jaw surgery and i hope he can help me.

I know this is an old thread but can you give us an update? I think I am going through the exact same thing as you. I have already also had teeth pulled and root canals and the pain remains. I also have TMJ and a bad bite but I had no idea it could cause pain this bad....
