I’m 73 and have severe aortic stenosis. I’ll need a TAVR procedure really soon, but have 2 teeth that need to be removed. I need to be premeditated. The problem is that I have severe reactions to Amoxicillin and the macrolide antibiotics.

Amoxicillin immediately (within an hour) causes SEVERE pain in my neck and shoulders. Bad enough that I can’t move, need a heating pad continuously, and aspirin or Tylenol every 4 hours. Even then, the pain is horrible. The macrolide antibiotics have given me C-diff twice. Will NOT take them again.

What do I take? What will be safe for me? These extractions need to be done ASAP, before I get an infection and it goes to my heart. The teeth are very badly decayed and one is broken. I’m so stressed it’s taking a toll on my heart and health.

Help!

You probably need to discuss this with your cardiologist, it's not really in a dentist's area of expertise.

My cardiologist tells me it’s my dentist responsibility. Which is why I’m asking here.

What does your dentist think then?

One of the other wide spectrum penicillin group might suit, or have you had similar problems with them in the past? Flucloxacillin or Ampicillin might work.
