Hi everyone!
I'm so glad I came across this site. Reading some of your responses has helped calm my fears!
Well, as the topic says - I have an abcessed tooth AND I can't swallow pills. So taking antibiotics is hard for me (I'm also allergic to penicillin, so I can't take most liquid medicines). I had the infection gone, but I had to wait so long to get into my dentist that it came back, and with a vengeance.
Yesterday I went to the dentist and got one of my teeth fixed, it needed a root canal (which was surprisingly easier then what I expected, however the pain I'm going through now is TERRIBLE!) - but I was too scared to get my other tooth pulled while I'm fully awake.
We're going to call a specialist on Monday to see about getting deep IV sedated or being put to sleep to have that tooth pulled.
Here's my problem... I don't know if it's pain from my tooth being infected, or if it's so much pain from the tooth that they did the RC on today - but my tooth is killing me, and lack of sleep is catching up. What can I do? (BTW, I'm in Ontario, Canada.)
I've got tylenol 3 with codeine, which had worked alright when I crushed them up and put them in orange juice, however the last few times I took the tylenol 3 I promptly threw them up, and the one I got down didn't calm the pain. I've tried tylenol extra strength and advil extra strength, neither of which helped diminish the pain. Right now I'm using childrens liquid tylenol because I can't stand the taste of anything else if I crush it up. It's helping just a little bit.
I've also tried.... salt water gargled in my mouth a few times, ice pack/heat pack to my cheek, whiskey on the problem teeth, cold water swished over my teeth (before my tooth was fixed last time I had to KEEP cold water over my tooth for almost 50 hours - talk about lack of sleep... putting it in my mouth, spitting it out, over and over again), chewing ice, and a few other things.
I would try the tylenol sitting on my problem tooth and letting it "numb" it but I've heard that this can be bad, and because of my bad gag reflex I'd most likely be spitting it out.
Is there anyone here who can't swallow pills (or has had that problem) and knows of a way I can get rid of the pain better?
I'm just so tired of being tired, and being in pain. That's what I get for 5 or 6 years without going to the dentist AND not brushing or flossing.
Anyone who could help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Also, would anyone suggest having general anasthesia or having intravenous sedation for the tooth being pulled? I can't do it while I'm awake/fully conscious. I have a hard enough time letting them simply scrape at my teeth and I gag on just about everything. I was put under general anasthesia when I got all four wisdom teeth out with only a slight problem of almost fainting before the GA was administered. If anyone knows, what one is more expensive?
Right now I'm not interested in overcoming any fears, I just want the pain fixed, and later I'll worry about my fear of dentists/dental procedures.
Again, thank you to anyone who has any bits of advice for me! I've tried so many things, I just don't want to fail again.
P.s. - sorry if this is in the wrong forum area - I didn't know where else to put it.
