Abscessed Tooth - Should the swelling worry me?

HI there,

I have been Googling my symptoms (Silly me!) and ended up full of anxiety. I am being treated for an abscessed tooth. I started Amoxicillin 500mg 3 times a day for 5 days. I am currently on day 4.

The pain has almost gone now although I am still taking pain killers. The swelling has mostly disappeared, however I am left with some swelling above my jaw bone. The swelling is about 2 inches long, soft but very tender.

Today is Monday, I finish my medication tomorrow and I will be given root canal treatment :shame: on Wednesday.

Should i be worried about the swelling? I can't see where it will drain from within my mouth. When I google tooth abscesses, I read lots of posts about the dangers of abscesses bursting etc. etc.

Should I see someone sooner than Wednesday, or should I leave this for my dentist to drain?

Thanks! I'm worried :)

I'm not a dentist but it might be best to phone your practice and see what they say.

If it helps, I had a root canal treatment and crown six years ago, which has reinfected with a lovely looking swelling on the gum. I have had it for over six weeks now as it's the quickest I can get in to see the endo specialist at my dentist.... my appointment was today!

My dentist got rid of the previous RCT, cleaned the inside completely, and has given me antibiotics for a week following treatment, so fingers crossed the swelling should disappear now that the infection has gone inside! As your appointment is tomorrow, I have my fingers crossed for you too! :)

Thank you for responding. I have my appointment this afternoon. I have watched lots of videos of the treatment being carried out on Youtube so i know what to expect. It doesnt look much different to a filling, but I will soon find out !

The swelling has gone down, almost gone now which is good.

Fingers Crossed! :)

Hope your appt goes well and you start feeling better!!

Update:

Thanks for your responses and good wishes.

I had the first half of root treatment last week. I can honestly say that it's no worse than a standard filling. Yes, it takes a little longer but had I not been told I was having root treatment I'd have thought it was just a long filling.

I have my second appointment on Monday.

Sadly, the dentist said I still had infection and put me back on antibiotics. I ended up with toothache and swelling again, but it's gradually calming down. I can't wait until all this is over with.

Thanks

Glad to hear it's calming down a little. Hope it goes quickly!!
