I'm going to the dentist tommorrow for 2 front crowns prepped dentist said it's a 2 hours appointment and I'm freaking out here so so scared, I'm petrified about having injections in the roof of my mouth and I really don't know if I can go through with it , I also suffer from IBS and I am frightened it will really kick in I don't know what to do any advise would be very much appreciated

Hi Louie,

I have never had an injection in the roof of my mouth myself but would be also pretty scared if that was the case. From reading here on the forum it's not as bad as most people imagine it. I will see if I can find a post about this that might reassure you a bit. Did your dentist tell you you will need this kind of injections and is it the only thing that you worry about?

All the best wishes

yes he said I need that sort of injection and I've got a real dental phobia about everything at the dentists but injections in particular scare me so much also worrying that they numb me

I have had the palatal shot many times. I will also be having a crown prep on a front tooth in the upcoming months, but am healing from an apicoectomy on my front tooth currently.

The palatal shot is not pleasant...I won't lie about that. However dentists have different tricks to help make it a little better. My oral surgeon presses against another part of the roof of my mouth with the dental mirror to distract, and that helped a lot. My endodontist actually uses a technique where she numbs the front, then injects from the front into the palate (not sure how, but through front gums). The actual palate shot was completely painless! I couldn't feel a thing. I actually plan to ask my dentist about it when I go in for the crown prep.
They will apply a topical first as well, that helps a lot with the pain.

Good luck!

Sadly I can't find the post I was looking for but here is our article about the fear of dental injections if you haven't read it yet.

Hello Louie,

First of all really great for you that you made this appt despite being scared about it. Have you had any shots from this particular dentist? and how do you feel about his chairside manner? I think that his technique and manner are really something that matter in this, and now adays shots , you barely feel them much of the time. They have so many ways to make them more painfree than they did years ago. I had some palatal shots on 10,11 just a few little ones. so wasn't the front teeth but upper roof shots that I was bracing for the worst but it was like a small mosquito poke, I was quite pleasantly surprised I was done. Shots can be a very scary thing. I have to have a dentist give me several on top or bottom then I am good with them.. and not as scared any more. Its certain valid to have these fears until they prove to be trustworthy in technique and manner.

Hi no I've not had any shots with this dentist I'm in UK and I always went to NHS dentist but I've gone private now for this treatment so as I've had some bad experiences before with other dentists I'm hoping he's going to be different

The first shot I have had with my last 2 dentists, my current and the last , the first shot I had with each I grabbed the dental nurse/assistants hand ready for the death grip upon the shot.. was pleasantly surprised it wasn't bad at all.. some factors were.. first of all I told them I was REALLY scared.. so they were very aware to make it easy on me. I always have topical before the shot which really helps, They took their time with it... and each dentist has their own special techniques even after that to make it painfree or very minimal pain. Do you feel comfortable discussing how scared you are about this with this dentist? I hope they will take the needed time for reassurance and to help you through it!

I have told him how scared I am I suppose because it's my upper front teeth I know I will have to have a injection in the roof of the mouth and it's going to be really painful and I'm going to freak out

Thats a great start that you shared how scared you were ! HOpefully he will really take his time and take you through tht process in a slow way to just reassure you through it all. Ask for topical and tell him to take it really slow would be what I would suggest .

I Know it’s scary but it’s going to be ok. If mind over matter helps, I used to try thinking past the moment of the injection. Thinking forward to the next part. Feeling nothing at all! A necessary step of uncomfortableness to get there.

It might hurt, but it might not. It honestly might not. If it does it will be over quick. Wishing you an experience that is better than you fear it will be.

Let us know how it goes Louie.. you have a lot of positive thoughts going your way tomorrow !!
