Hey everyone. Im hoping someone can offer me some advice.
I’m 25 years old with what I’m pretty certain is advanced periodontitis.
My lower front 2 teeth have receded as far as they can and have a heavy build up of tartar on the back of them. One tooth is noticeably loose if I wobble it with my finger but doesn’t move when brushing. 2 other teeth at the bottom are slightly mobile when I try to move them with my finger but not as bad as the other. My gums bleed when brushing even though I’ve tried to up my cleaning regime. I haven’t noticed any mobility in any of my other teeth but they’ve definitely receded, just not as much as my bottom tooth.

Yet still, I’m absolutely terrified about going to the dentist. My main fear is having no teeth which I know is stupid as if I don’t go to the dentist they’ll fall out anyway. I’m hoping some of you can answer some (maybe stupid) questions I have as I really need to know what to expect.

If I need all my teeth taken out will they leave me with no teeth? Sounds stupid but that’s my number 1 fear - walking around with no teeth until they can fit some :(

During a deep clean can that cause my teeth to fall out there and then? I’m scared that when they’re cleaning my gums/removing plaque all of my teeth are just going to fall out into my mouth.

I’m assuming you need a cast thing over your teeth to get dentures fitted - is it likely my tooth will come out in the wax? Mainly the one that’s loose when I move it.

I’m currently in the UK if that makes any difference.

Do you think I’ll end up losing all of my teeth? Is there anyone else with a similar story who wouldn’t mind sharing. Feel sick with worry I literally have a panic attack even thinking about picking up the phone to ring them :(

That’s my fear with a deep cleaning too. I had one years ago and things were fine. Sore but fine. Now since I’m older and the extraction of the molar I’m terrified to call and make the periodontist appointment.

Hi, well this is my history too! Dealing with the same thing like you. Is like Im reading my post.I had my first appointment last Wednesday. They made my xrays. Well this was my dentist said: if you dont do something you are gonna lose all your teeth. I knew it for sure but coming from him was like a reality for me. I have movement on 4 of my teeth. Today I had a deep clean on my left upper quadrant, In that one I have 1 teeth with a little movement. I didnt feel any pain at that moment, now I feel a little sore. This friday they are going to do my lower s quadrant, and that one scares me. (4) of my incisive have movement score 1 and A lot tartar, but I need to fight my fear and finally do this step. I encourage you to do it too.

So glad I’m not alone. I’ve made an appointment and I’m being seen in 10 days. Absolutely terrified I feel sick to my stomach. Would you mind keeping me updated on this post with how everything goes on Friday? Thankyou so much for replying

Hi Pmjd84 just wanted to mention that in my experience NHS dentistry in UK, places very little importance on gums in general, with most people who do want regular hygienist cleans (best way to keep your gums healthy coupled with daily selfcare -especially once you get to a certain age) being told they have to pay privately.
This may well also apply to the specialism of periodontics - not sure how easy it would be to access the best gum-saving treatments on the NHS. So if you can afford to do so, it might be worth mentioning that you would like a referral to a periodontist (gum specialist) privately if necessary. This could avoid extraction and denture being the go to solution which seems to be your main fear too.
I am not dentally qualified in any way but I think you do not have to worry about your teeth falling out during deep cleaning or impressions...most dentists would say they have never known it happen.
I know it is a big deal for you to go along at all but if you have made an NHS appointment the time slot will likely be quite short and so don't waste too much energy worrying about what they may say to you. They would need to make a separate appointment to evaluate your situation properly, do pocket readings etc. Also remember you have the right to be numbed up for any cleaning they do (not likely at check up at all) if you do have a lot of recession/soreness, you need to be numbed. There is no point scaring yourself off getting treated by suffering unnecessary pain.

Hi Pmjd84 , everything went good.. I came back with all my teeth ?, really I was scare. Im still a little numb but like I said on my post my lowers are the worst. So I feel more sore right now than my upper right cleaning she did on wednesday. A lot anesthesia on my incisives I didnt feel anything, dont know how deep she went. I could tell on my molars cause i felt a lot pression at some moment I need to ask for more anesthesia after that didnt feel any pain, just the pression. Now I have a big space at he bottom of my central teeth after she take all the tartar cause my gumm are really low.. I wish they heal a little so the dont look so big.

I went for the first time today having gone through exactly what you've said - but I'm a bit older. My front lower tooth had come out altogether which prompted me to take some action. I had a cast done to make a single tooth denture and I thought my other teeth were going to come out as well but it was ok. It is definitely not the best experience I've ever had but I'm so much happier tonight having at least moved forwards with addressing the problem. The actual dentist experience was much worse in my head than it was in reality although I was terrified at the time!

Glad you did it! You’re right even when we have a lot work to be done ( in my case, I have an advanced periodontal disease)it feel really good to be in progress and not more guessing of my situation. So congratulations for your new begining of this journey.
