Advice on root extraction

I have a retained root with the gum partially covering but seems like the gum is deteriorating over the retained root.
My questions are:

1. Why is the gum deteriorating over the retained root?
2. If I one day had the retained root removed would gum grow over it again to cover it?

Hi @Kml1998
The rough surface of the root will attract plaque and be impossible to clean, this could lead to minor irritation of the partially overlying gum. Hence an unhealthy appearance.
If the root was extracted the gum would rapidly and fully heal over the area.
