Hi
I hope you can help me.
I had a tooth removed on Wednesday its now Saturday and I am still in agony. I went back to the dentisit yesterday and he packed the hole with something that smelt like dettol and tasted vile - this worked for a while but I have woken up again in agony. This cant be normal. what could be wrong???

It's a dry socket. The blood clot has broken down to fast where the tooth has been extracted and left an open wound. Which hurts a lot as you've discovered.
It usually happens to women more than men and more often to smokers than non-smokers, but they are pretty unpredictable.

Basically all the dentist can do is wash out the socket and place a variety of packing materials into the wound. Painkillers and tincture of time are about the only other things that will help at the moment I'm afraid.

Thank you so much for this. It explains why the dentist asked me if I was a smoker ( i am not) and why i could see the bare bone of my jaw. Hopefully the pain will wear down. I wrote the question at 3am as I was in absolute agony but, fingers crossed the pain killers are lasting much longer now. The dentist has said that I shouldnt need to go back to him for a further packing as the one that is in should disolve

I now feel so releived that someone could tell me what was wrong, i have had teeth removed before and have never had this much pain after. By the way my front teeth feel like they are 'on edge' I am assuming that this is normal due to the amount of work I had done - 1 extraction and two fillings- and that when everything settles down they will aswell.

regards

Michelle
