hi all,

I went to a low-cost dentist (cleaning & xray $60) but they gave
it to me for free, being a new customer). I used salt, snore spray
and chloraseptic spray altogether, but I'd say the chloraseptic spray
was the best thing.

It was hard to stay calm because the woman doing the xrays was
telling me lies like: "oh there's nothing you can do for gagging."
So I got a little uppity. Then at one point I wanted to take a break,
and she want;ed to keep going because she had other biological
units to attend to, and I was struggling with gagging, so I insisted on
it, re-sprayed with chloraseptic spray, and got through it.

But you know what? Going to the dentist is just like going to
those horribly dishonest car mechanics that keep telling you
different things about what is and is not wrong with your car.
So I bought a book, because now I realize I'm just going to have to
educate myself a lot more. What a pain! It's always this way
with medical personnel.

So this free dentist wanted to give me a "deep cleaning" for $400,
said my crown is cracked, and said I have one cavity. By the time
the front desk clerk came around, it had magically turned into
two cavities. amazing.

So when I got home I started reading the brochure they gave me
about gum disease, and started going "wait a minute." It says
that periodontitis starts when you have pockets that are greater
than 3mm. They never mentioned anything about pockets to me.
Then I learn that It's when you have deep pockets, like 6mm or more,
that you want the deep cleaning with scaling and planing, in which
case you should just skip the general dentist and go straight for the
specialist.

So I went to another cheap dentist. The girl that did the xray was
a real pro, no problems at all there, I couldn't believe it. But this
dentist said I have four cavities, but my crown is fine, no cracks.
I ask him to show me on the x-ray where the cavities are because
I want to know what a cavity looks like on an x-ray. he said to me
" see where those shadows are."? I swear I couldn't see anything
and I looked hard. So now I have to learn what a cavity really looks like
on an x-ray.

So this guy wanted $600 to do a deep cleaning, and I started questioning
him about why, and he got nervous. He basically said that I have
a really bad buildup of tartar, which is true, and that I'd need to have
cleaning done between the teeth. No mention of scaling or root
planing below the gum line, which is what the higher price of the deep
cleaning is for. No mention of pockets.

What kind of scam are these dentists pulling? So I told him until I
can afford, it, I need to get a regular cleaning done because it's
driving me crazy. So he said whatever you want. so ok then.
(but I am not giving him any kind of $600).

I bet you anything if I go to another dentist in 2-3 months with less
tartar buildup, a deep cleaning won't even occur to them. Bet you
anything.

Anyway, I got my waterpik now, got my electric toothbrush and
lsiterine, and now an oral health bible. And I'm going back for the
cleaning on Monday. We'll see how it goes.

Glad to hear the chloraseptic spray worked :) - some other people here have given very positive feedback on it as well, so it must be good.

It would be interesting to find out if the opinion re. deep cleaning does indeed change (considering that two dentists have said the same thing). Please report back in 2/3months time to let us know.

yes, I plan to do that. I will report back. I will have to find yet
another dentist and not tell that person anything about
previous thoughts.

They just aren't telling me that I need scaling and planing, nor
making any claim that I have pockets over 3mm, and saying
I need to pay $600 just to get cleaning "between the teeth"
seems a rip off to me. I have to do more self education though.
