Hi, this is my first post and I'm kind of just trying to talk this out so I apologize for the insanely long post. any advice or experiences are welcome.
I'm getting a deep cleaning Tuesday and this is the first treatment appointment I've had in years due to needle phobia and ptsd. I am on the autism spectrum and have horrible sensory issues. I had a bad experience when I was 16 where the numbing was very painful and I had a panic attack. Both me and my mother told them to stop and it was ignored and from that point I've been terrified. I'm also a survivor of SA, so it's all just a lot for me to handle.
This time around I have a dentist I trust, and I have my friend with me to hold my hand and be my support. I know if anything goes wrong he will stand up for me, and that the dentist will listen to my requests. I was already told that no matter what, if I am having a rough time, they will stop and reschedule for general anesthesia.
We are going to use nitrous oxide, and oral sedation. However, I can either take 10 mg of Valium two hours before hand, or I can wait till I get to the office and be given oral midazoalm. The choice was left up to me.
Oral Midazoalm I know has amnesia, which is helpful for PTSD so I don't remember what happens, but the downside is I'll be more sedated and in my mind, " out of control ". It was used before successfully prior to being put under for wisdom teeth removal but I also had full anesthesia. I cant help but wonder if that was the real reason it " worked" even though I don't even remember being taken back for surgery. There was one time prior to that where the IV sedation did not work and I was I guess non compliant, but don't remember any of it. Hence the general anesthesia for the oral surgery. So I just worry it won't go according to plan.
As for Valium I took 5 mg for the consultation and was able to let them take x rays and check my teeth, which was huge progress so she prescribed it again but a higher dose. I know it doesn't really effect my memory but ill have more control of the situation regarding my body's reaction. I'd be able to actively choose to pause and keep going or to reschedule Which is more what I'm leaning towards.
If anybody has experience with either of these and feel comfortable sharing I would love to hear some success stories, or advice regarding pros and cons of each. I know none of it is medical advice and ultimately the choice is mine, but some others thoughts would be helpful.
