I am usually pretty fearless when it comes to the dentist. I did have some shame after a bout of depression led me to neglect my dental health -- I ended up with more decay than I should have and subsequently cost myself a good amount of money with RCT and crowns.
However, I've been on top of that for almost a decade now. I was really surprised when I started having pain in my lower front teeth. I thought it was stuck food, so I flossed, broke some build-up free, and ended up thinking THAT was part of a tooth where decay finally gave way. I had been seeing a dentist on a treatment plan and these teeth weren't called out for needing treatment, but nevertheless... I had my concerns. Saw my dentist, he didn't see decay or loss of enamel etc. but all the same I had pain. After looking at the x-ray he felt it was an infection beneath tooth 24, possibly 23 as well. He did a root canal there. This pain however persisted and did seem to affect tooth 23. So he root canaled 23 as well.
The pain lessened but remained. It naturally had less nerve within the tooth to feel/transmit pain/irritation after the RCT but I still had soreness and strange sensations around these teeth. My dentist wasn't state-of-the-art. I opted to get a second opinion at a more fancy endodontist. They used a CT scan and determined the root canals missed the very bottom of these teeth, the infection wasn't actually dealt with, and the only option was an apicoectomy on both 23 and 24.
So, we went with the apicos. That was 5 months ago. Their instructions said "pain or discomfort between visits is not indicative of a failed procedure" on the discharge, my follow-up for the stitches went well, and they scheduled me to return in a year. These 5 months however have been... strange. I still have soreness occasionally. I still have odd sensitivity around these teeth. I definitely feel like 'nerve' sensations because I get twitchy feelings near these teeth/along a short part of the jaw at times.
Of course I understand bone regrows, could take a bit (even with the bone graft), these nerves were absolutely assaulted by the apico, etc. Being at the front of my mouth these teeth are used for a lot of biting and are often being touched by the tongue idly or while speaking etc. I will return to the endo and update them on this but wanted to see if anyone else had similar problems with this kind of surgery/treatment. How long it took to feel 'normal' again...
Thanks for reading.
