I've been wondering lately how hygienists work. Do they possibly make commission on things they sell or push? About two years ago, I had a complete deep cleaning on my gums. Everything was perfect and for months after, my check ups were great. The prior cleaning I had was five years before so I can understand the need for the deep cleaning.
However, I just recently let a year go by without a cleaning due to taking care of other dental issues. When I went in recently, the hygienist said that I need a deep cleaning around a few crowns I have. She was probing around measuring my gums and calling out three, fours and a couple of fives.
I consider my oral hygiene to be pretty good. I brush every morning and night and floss every night. I also routinely rinse with hydrogen peroxide/water. My gums never hurt or bleed.
So, I'm having these thoughts of whether I really need to undergo another deep cleaning. I did some research and read about some dental offices that pay commission on what services they sell. So it got me thinking.
Also, she was heavily pushing for me to use a Waterpik. She has never done that in the past and when I was in recently for an extraction, I heard a different hygienist pushing the Waterpik. They even have one in their waiting room. Why is that? They can't possibly be making money on suggesting an item like that.
If anyone on here is a hygienist, I would love to get your thoughts. I'm just trying to make the right/best decision with my dental work. I only have so much each year with dental insurance and I'm getting ready to have some partials made. I don't want to use my insurance on unnecessary procedures.
Thanks so much.
