Hello, I would like some help with this please

Is Articaine a good injection if there have been problems getting numb in the past. My dentist has mentioned he will use this to make sure I am comfortable, but why should this work if other injections haven't and are there any problems having this?

Articaine has a faster onset of action and more drug/carpule than lidocaine.

The short answer is YES.
From Dr Spiller's website:
QUOTE: 'The ability of this drug to penetrate barriers is so great that it has been used to penetrate thick bone to produce anesthesia in a way that other anesthetics cannot. Articaine has become the local anesthetic of choice in most countries into which it has been introduced. I have found that it produces profound anesthesia (in most patients) when used as an infiltration (field block) for mandibular premolars and anterior teeth instead of the traditional mandibular nerve block..

With clinical reports of profound anesthesia, fast onset, and success in difficult-to-anesthetize patients, Septocaine has become the most used dental anesthetic brand name in the US, although lidocaine still remains the most used type of anesthetic. '

Septocaine is a brand name for articaine. It has also been available in Europe for much longer than in USA according to that American website.

After having a bunch of RCT and emergency treatments during the last year and having shots of both lidocaine and articaine, I can say that I absolutely prefer articaine: it has a very fast onset and was very effective even on my badly inflamed teeth.

I think articaine would be worth a try in your case, it certainly worked for me.

:)

My dentist always gets me really numb and it lasts for ages - I suspect he is not using standard lidocaine.

I use articain and it is highly effective. There is an increased risk of parathesia when used as blocks.

Thank you for your replys.

I must ask what is parathesia. My dentist says the articaine will have a profound effect on the upper teeth that is where I need treatment. I hope the injection will work on my top tooth.

Yes articain is great for upper teeth!
his can last a couple of weeks or even be permenant.

Do you mean it can cause nerve damage in the top of the mouth? Im not so sure I want it used on me.

NO Nerve blocks are basically only given for lower teeth. Even when used for lower teeth the incidence is very low. When first introduced in the USA it was not considered a higher risk. In the past several years it has been recognized as a risk (although low) for nerve damage. At least one malpractice carrier has advised its doctors to not use it as nerve blocks.
I do not use it for nerve blocks. I do use it to infiltrate and for individual teeth injections.
