Hi,
It has taken a lot of courage to come here and post this. I have been so upset.
This is the second time this has happened, had to leave a previous practice because of a dentist who made me feel small, ashamed and had no interest in listening to my concerns are questions.
I was lucky ( or so I thought ) to find another practice earlier this year who were taking on NHS patients. Initially I saw the foundation dentist who was understanding and empathetic, she was due to be leaving soon as they only spend a year there. I was passed on to another dentist, partly because I have numerous issues, the worst one being two very loose teeth at the bottom front, one of which has severe gum disease, a bridge involved and he was more experienced.
When I first went to him back in May, he said the problem needed dealing with as soon as possible, he would extract the two teeth and provide a partial denture, the appointment was rushed by him and I had not been given a treatment plan or how this denture would fit etc.
Unfortunately, because 2 other dentists left the practice, my follow up appointment was delayed until the 17th of September, that is when the problems started all over again.
When I entered the treatment room, I said apologies for not being able to get here sooner, but could not get a quicker appointment, he looked at me and said " I don't even know what you are here for " although he had said what he was going to do at the last appointment?? I felt so uncomfortable as did not understand what was going on, but as those of you who suffer dental anxiety know, it is difficult to speak up in these challenging situations!
He then examined all of my mouth and said " it doesn't look like you teeth have been cleaned for days " which is absolutely not true, I brush them twice a day, morning and night. there is a little difficulty cleaning the loose teeth and gum recession granted, but to say it in such a disrespectful way is, in my opinion unwarranted. He also said a visit to the hygienist would not go amiss, which is fine but think I will struggle to deal with it right now because of the gum recession and wobbly teeth, I also since the first visit have got pain in a back tooth, which the foundation dentist said needed a root canal or extraction, this is also going to be challenging to clean as it is very tender. He flatly refused to do root canal on it and said it would not work. I left that appointment feeling so upset and ashamed, but more ashamed that I could not speak up.
Now I am totally confused why I have had different advice to the first visit, having trouble eating because of the loose teeth and now lost and don't know what to do.
Do these dentists not realise how upsetting it is to patients speaking to them in that way? particularly when it has been so hard to deal with attending in the first place. Is this something anyone can relate to??
