Hey everyone. I have a question about tooth extraction. I have a root canal that's gone bad because the filling fell out and I didn't have any money for a crown. The tooth has completely fallen apart and only the bottom part inside the gum remains. I have an appt tomorrow morning and at first I expected it to be simple. Just easy tooth extraction of the rest of it and be done. Now that I'm looking around online, I've seen that if they have no tooth to pull up with, that it'll require surgical extraction. Is that true?? Right below the gum line is still there, just the actual top part of the tooth is gone. And if it's surgical, do I HAVE to be put under with anesthesia?? I'm terrified of being put under and I really don't wanna do that. I wasn't worried about this appt and now I'm starting to :(

i think they have to tell you if you were going to be put under. For one they usually don't want you to eat and two...they wouldn't let you drive home. I think surgical probably just means they may have to cut into gum tissue. They can do that awake with a local. Don't panic. Hopefully a dentist will be along to answer you for sure but if you have already spoken to your dentist about removing it and they did not give you any prep instructions you aren't being put out. You also can ask if it can be done with just a local. A lot of times things can be done it just might take longer or most people prefer being under etc.

I've had surgical extractions of wisdom teeth with just local. And, tiger is correct - if you were having sedation they would have told you b/c you'd need to not eat from the night before and have someone drive you.

Hi I am not a dentist but you won't be put to sleep for the extraction and one of the dentist on here did say that a root is easy to remove. It should be the simple procedure you were expecting, if your dentist thought it was going to be complicated he would refer you to a specialist.

Don't worry it won't take long and it will come out okay. Don't worry about it being classed as surgery a rct is surgical and they are fine. It is just medical terminology that scares us half to death but isn't anything to be worried about. Dr, Dentist talk sounds much worse than it actually is.

Please don't look on the internet about this as it will have you running for the hills, apart from this site which can explain things in an easy to understand and none scary manner.

Once you are numbed the dentist will prepare the root and gently lift it out, you won't even know it has gone until they tell you. They will ask you to bite on a cotton pad and check that a clot is forming and that you are okay then you can go. You won't feel anything and if you did let them know and they can top up the numbing stuff. Arrange a stop signal before they start if it makes you feel better. It will probably take you longer to go numb than it will to extract the root. The dentist can test the area to make sure you are good and numb before they start.

Try not to worry, good luck.
