Bone graft recommended with extraction?

Hi there,

I had a root canal failed 3 times in a lower left first molar tooth many years ago leaving me super anxious. As a result I left it, its been infected I’m sorry to say for around 6 years. I’m now concerned about sepsis. I can’t face another root canal so I’ve decided to get it extracted, this time going private for some extra reassurance (no offence to any NHS dentists at all).
  • Is it recommended to get a bone graft/socket preservation treatment even if I’m not going to get a tooth replacement done?
  • I would like to get my bottom teeth straightened using something like invisiline, should I still get the bone graft/socket preservation treatment? I’ve heard extractions can actually help aligning, but I have no idea.
  • Does anyone recommend any good cheaper alternatives to invisiline?
Thanks in advance

Hi,

As far as I know, recent research shows that it is better not to put a bone replacement right after an extraction. Again, this is recent development so maybe your dentist will think differently.
A chipper orthodontic treatment might be the good old braces.

Is it possible please @Dr. Daniel or any other dentists to shed some more light on this? Do you have any details of the recent developments and why it might be better not to get a bone graft right after extraction?

I need to have my upper-left first molar extracted (due to a cracked root the tooth is unrestorable) and have been offered the option of a graft in the socket at the time of extraction. The specialist says this may help preserve the bone and gum volume, making me slightly less likely to require a bone graft if I decide to get an implant (still thinking about that). And also that I may have a slightly better final aesthetic outcome due to less tissue shrinkage.

The suggestion that this might not be a good idea is a little concerning, and obviously I want to make the right call about whether to get the graft alongside the extraction or not.

Many thanks.
