Post Tooth extraction Infection/Problems

** Read later posts for new problem :( **

Im glad I found this site, im litterly shaking just at the thought of having to go too the dentist next week :(

Basicly, I had a filling done in one of my bottom Molars done as a kid at least 5 years ago!
About a year ago whilst eating a part of that tooth broke off (on the side/back). Nothing however was exposed and the filling was still in place. However last night the filling came out whilst eating. This has kind of left the tooth in a "L" shape with no top of the tooth etc so im guessing the pulp? is exposed...
Im going to the chemist tomoro to buy a temp filling mix thing so its covered throughout the week untill I reach the dentist.

Theres currently no pain but I have reluctantly after speaking to my uncle made an oppointment with a dentist for next week. Im going in for an examination and if needed at that point another filling. Rather stupidly have been googling and scared myself shitless looking at things like root canals etc....

So basicly, im kind of looking for reassurance, what is most likely the dentist will do? Will it hurt etc?

Hi Ezeckial
:welcome:
Please try not to worry. It is most likely that the filling would just be replaced (5 years is not very long for it to last - so you do wonder how well it was done originally) which would involve minimal drilling. If you are numbed up, it should not be painful at all. A root canal should also be painless especially if done by an endodontist.

What I would ask though is how have you chosen your dentist? All dentists are not the same and if you are a nervous patient it is a good idea to go to someone known to be competent and sympathetic, rather than just any name in the phone book.

Best wishes for the appointment.

Thank you for the welcome, I hope I dont have to use this site too often! But it is an amazing resource and reading some of the stuff on here compared to what is elsewhere on the web is simply amazing!

I have litterally gone out on a limb and phoned up several dentists in my local area. Although I am registered with one back at home its 250miles away and being a student rather skint!
Rather stupidly I mostly went on the conversation with the receptionist, I was kind of desperate to get it done tho. As much as I hate the dentist im equally scared of knowing somethings not quite right in my mouth, Catch 22 :/

Is there no one you can ask for a personal recommendation? That really is the best way to avoid disappointment.

I suggest you avoid corporate dental chains in USA.

Sadly not! I dont know many locals that are in the same area as me!

The place im going to is a joint NHS and private centre. To keep my mind at peace I googled their staff etc.
Annoyingly they couldnt take on any new NHS patients so had to do it privately! :(

Sorry I originally assumed you were in USA. If they do take on NHS patients, it is a bit rough to deny NHS care to a student, given your restricted income. Let us know how it goes.

Hey, so i had some good news and bad news!
I had to have the tooth extracted, not as bad as i thought it would be, the guy was amazing and would reccomend to anyone!

But i think sinve i had it taken out (Thurs) it has become infected :(
Im going to ring the dentist in the morning but at the moment i am in agony and cant sleep.
When he pulled the tooth he put something dissolvable in it but thats now gone and it seems pussy, also smells/tastes really bad :( also to the side of the extraction site there seems to be almost like a hole, almost in tears atm, not just due to having to go back but the finacials

Just too add, Came back from A&E. Pain was unbearable, nothing they could do cept deal with the pain, but deffo appears infected and there seems to be bone coming out from the side of the extraction site :/
Given me a number to ring so fingers crossed can get seen as an emergency nhs patient soon!

I got an infection after an extraction too, stupidly ignored it for the best part of a week but once I got antibiotics it started to clear, it is amazing when you realise all of a sudden that your mouth has stopped tasting like you ate a cat's litter tray! Once the infection goes it will start to heal over, it's been about a month since my extraction now and despite my initial problems it seems to be healing well, there is no longer a hole, and lots of new gum. Have just started tentatively eating on that side of my mouth again and it seems to be OK! Get some antibiotics and some Corsodyl mouthwash. Use a water and salt rinse each time you eat to swill out any bits of food and to promote healing. Use Corsodyl after brushing your teeth (but give it 10 mins or so after brushing to do this). It tastes like crap but it is good for you!
