Can a dental assistant place a temporary crown?

I just had this done and thought it was very strange. I am in the USA. Is this normal practice? Is a dental assistant allowed to place a permanent crown here? I thought about calling the office before my visit just to clarify that the dentist will be placing the permanent. I am assuming so but now I am worried?

Yes it's allowed in many States in the US. I have no idea about the permanent one, sorry.
