Why would my dentist say I have a cavity but it doesn't need a filling yet? I can clearly see a cavity on my upper back molar. It's on what I think you call the palatal surface of the tooth. I asked about it at my dental check up, because I wasn't sure if it was a cavity or staining. I was told it was definitely a cavity and it would need a filling but not just yet. I know sometimes dentists put a watch and wait on teeth with caries and they sometimes never get worse and don't need filling, but in this case I've been told it will need a filling but not just yet. What's the sense in waiting? Should I insist on a filling or seek a second opinion?

Sounds a bit odd, are you sure they didn't mean they were just going to monitor it for a while?

I don't think so. I asked what the blackness on the tooth I could see was. The reply was "It's a cavity, it will need a filling but not yet."

Sorry, I've no idea why they said that :-)

I would go to another dentist. its not normal to ignore a cavity
