Cavity not fully excavated?

I'm curious and have a question for the dentist.

If someone has a semi-deep cavity, and most of the decayed area is drilled out, (but not all, say the last part), and a composite filling is put in and finished...

does decay continue underneath the filling if its completely sealed?
or does the sealing with the composite prevent any futher decay, because the bacteria cannot live in that space anymore? (as long as teeth are kept clean and in good shape of course).

Thanks in advance.

The latter, if you remove the supply of nutrients to the bugs, then they die.

It's one of the newer ideas for decay control, seems to work.

Yes - if you use healozone and then put fuji on - what stops the decay continuing a child's baby tooth..is it the healozone (probably not?) it's just the fact that you've effectively sealed it off.
The fuji stuff they use is pink though so great for girls to show off but maybe not for boys ;). Has worked for both my kids - oldest is filling free in his adult teeth.
