The Faculty of Dental Surgery (of The Royal College of Surgeons of England) is putting on a study day entitled "Communication: Nervous Patients - Anxious Dentists".

The day aims to discuss the psychology of patient and self-management on the clinician’s part which will achieve less stressful encounters in the dental surgery. Presentation and communication between the dental team and nervous patients as well as patients with intellectual impairment will be considered. More practical issues to achieve pain-free dental care applicable to both groups of patients will also be covered.

Topics covered include:

- Communication and negotiating skills
- Non-verbal communication
- Communication with stroke patients
- The impact on early traumas on subsequent behaviours
- Neuro-linguistic programming
- Better local anaesthesia
- Management strategies for anxiety-mediated gag reflexes. Does acupuncture work?
- Inhalation sedation and hypnosis in primary dental care
