Hi

I have posted before about my dreadful dental year last year. Today was my 6 month check-up following the bad experiences last year. I don't need any fillings BUT I am due to see the specialist again next week as it will be 6 months since she did my root canal treatment on my premolar tooth. Last time she said I was borderline needing a crown. That didn't worry me as I have a white crown on a broken tooth at the bottom and had no problems.

However, my dentist says he will need to see my x-ray before deciding on what crown I can have because he has to drill more tooth away if it's a white one on metal. The tooth is not broken but they say it has a big filling, a big space in the middle. He said his only option might be a full metal crown which I didn't even know existed as I thought crowns were white. So I got upset because NO WAY am I walking around with a big metal tooth right in the corner of my smile that everyone can see. I have never seen anyone else walking around like this and the idea is ludicrous. I'd be a laughing stock.

Please help - what else can I do? Can I pay private and get some other type of crown?
I don't understand how my bottom tooth broke and I got a white crown on that (on NHS). This one isn't even broken and he's saying I might not be able to get a white one?

Now my dental worries are starting again just as I thought I'd got rid of them.

Also, my gums got a score 2 and a 3 in one place. How do I make the 3 into a 2?

:(

Thanks,
Mo.

I have a metal crown on my bottom tooth it is a chewing tooth and they are stronger and better, they are gold and I am sure you have seen people with gold in their mouth. They don't show up that much. They are better because if you have gold they take less tooth away to house it.

To get your number 3 down to a 2 you can help by flossing and brushing twice a day with an electric toothbrush for at least 2 minutes taking more time around the tooth that has the number 3. I was advised to use mouth wash as it is supposed to get to the gums at the front side where we can't get with the brush. How right this bit of information is I don't know. I have always liked salt water to rinse with but I think that is just my choice. I am also told that alcoholic free mouth wash is best.

I hope this helps a bit. :butterfly:

Your dentist should give you the information you need but I know they don't always help in this way.

Hi
thanks for your reply. I will have a look at the different mouthwashes.

Where do you have your crown? I wouldn't be bothered if it was a back tooth that wasn't visible but this is a top premolar which is visible when I smile & when I talk so it needs to be white.

My xray is the 13th ( just realised Fri 13th!) so I will know then. I put a mirror underneath that tooth & the shell that is there is a lot thinner than the one behind it but I have a white filling so can't tell that well.

I managed to get my x-ray done by the specialist today instead of waiting.
The root treated tooth is fine. She said it's not essential for the root filling that I have a crown but I can have one to protect the tooth from breaking if I wanted it.
She also said she hasn't a clue why my dentist was going on about a metal-only crown. She said there is sufficient tooth for a white crown and she told me there are even private ones now that are all white and contain no metal at all!!!

So the decision lies with me now really.

My crown is the first big tooth after the front teeth on the bottom. It has never bothered me, I thought that if crowns were on your front teeth they did white anyway, I think a different dentist would be in order. Keep looking and as soon as one becomes available move.

I am glad you managed to get some advice from a decent dentist. Shame you can't see the emergency dentist you saw she sounds lovely and caring. :butterfly:

Hi

I have decided not to have the crown for the timebeing as it is not essential. If the tooth breaks or if I decide to get it then I'll have to pay private I think to get what I want. The one he was talking about wasn't gold, it was all a silver metal colour and the tooth is at the top, number 4 so visible all the time.

I want to sort my gum out and I am fed up of dental procedures. Last year was a nightmare for me with dental treatments. I will still enquire about having this clean I want but I want my gum to heal and then I don't want any more dental treatment ever!
