I’ve had three lots of crowns fitted over my lifetime. Aged 19, 36 and now at 62. I had kidney disease as a child in the 1960’s, was weaned on Tetracycline and have had two lots of major surgery. The by product of all this was the need for crowns in 1981.

I looked after them. Each set of 6 x upper lasted way longer than predicted. My last lot were done 2 months ago. I’ve been back and forth having adjustments and am now at my wits end. They’re painful, horribly sensitive, bleed when I floss, my bite is still off and I’ve absolutely no idea what the problem is. I don’t know why this has happened. Aged 19, they were all porcelain, needed minimal bite adjustment and lasted til age 36. Next set were PFM, again requiring a little adjustment but were insitu for 26yrs. I’ve no idea what to do. The treatment was not undertaken lightly, was necessary and I was prescribed Diazepam to get through it.

What can have gone wrong? What can I do? I’m terrified of the dentist and have gone through all this to be in pain and discomfort, have developed a lisp and inability to eat ordinary foods I ate before.

I feel quite desperate and very very upset.

Hopefully your dentist has study models of what you had prior to replacing these crowns. The lisp is from the positioning of the front teeth. I think some persistence is needed by the treating dentist to resolve this issue which may include redoing part of the treatment.

Thank you for your response.

Each time I attend I have “reshaping” done. I have been told that if I require much more it can make the zirconia vulnerable to damage. I have also been told to remember to keep my top and bottom teeth from touching. I thought she was joking.

I’m ashamed to say that I have twice been in tears in the surgery. Once quietly, in anticipation of more alterations and once because I was asked to let her know if I was “uncomfortable” when adjustments being made. What she did and, the cold water jet, was excruciatingly.

I felt really stupid.

There's excuses and there's corrections. Something is wrong with the shape or occlusion with your crowns. If your dentist is unable to correct then it is best to seek care from someone who can.

Oh don't feel stupid at all. It happens lots of people, dental experiences can be traumatic and we all carry it to the next appointment. I've been so traumatised by a year of tooth pain due to incompetence, I burst into uncontrollable tears recently when trying to tell a new dentist the sorry tale. She thought I was crying because my tooth had died and kept saying "look. look, I have a dead root canalled front tooth too, look at it..."
All I could do was peer up at her through the tears and blurt out "oh but your teeth are so lovely" !!! 🥺😜 I felt like an eejit for a day or 2 and then decided that it wasn't worth worrying about.

Best of luck with your crowns.

Thank you for that reassurance. I’m really scared I’ll end up with false teeth. Or, in and out of the dentist for the next ten years, lurching from one problem to the next. I’ve always looked after my teeth. Real and otherwise!

I'm terrified of any false teeth too, even a plate. I couldn't cope with the taking them out and putting them in. My teeth are all filled since my mid 20s, I only started looking after them around then but all my crowns and fillings will need to be replaced over the coming years as they are so old and are sure to fail. So I do my best to keep them right, floss, tepes, both types, manuyal brush and an electric one. I use everything after I eat. And I'll do a quick brush after a cuppa! But still I ended up with a cavity on a front tooth. I think they can do a lot now to save whatever bit of a tooth is remaining so let's hope we can both escape dentures!

Awww, thank you. I wish you well 😊
