Dental implants: Drilling directly or making an incision before drilling?

I am having an dental implant placed in my lower jaw next month. While consulting with my dentist about it, he mentioned that he drills directly into the gum and jaw as opposed to makes an incision before drilling into the gum and jaw. I did not think much about at first, but now I am thinking that I perhaps should consider the consequences, if there are any... I have done a lot of searching online but have not been able to find anything informative as of yet...

So, could anyone kindly shed some light about whether it makes a difference and if so what different that it makes.

Much appreciated!

sounds like a technique for a mini implant.
