Hi! I am new here and have never posted anything.

I had a consultation last week and I was told I needed 5 cavity fillings, and 1 root canal (yes, it's horrible but I've been avoiding the dentist since I was younger)

I scheduled my appointment for the 5 fillings, and I have confirmation that the appointment was for the 5 fillings via email.
While they were doing my fillings, they kept saying it was 6 fillings and I just thought they found another cavity and decided to just do it for free. When I leave, I kept thinking about the 6 cavities, and where the last one would have been. My tongue was still numb, but I had some feeling and while I was rubbing my teeth, I noticed the hole where I needed a root canal was no longer a hole. I get home and look in the mirror and I see that the hole that needs a root canal has been filled. I'm not sure if it was a mistake, or if he determined on his own that a root canal was not needed and just filled it for me. This all happened in the same office, but the consultation and the one who did the fillings is not the same dentist. I still have not called the office to confirm, but im not sure how to even ask them. I'm just worried that for his mistake, I will need more extensive work in the future. I have the biggest fear of the dentist and just thinking of going back and now having to have that fixed freaks me out.

Any suggestions of how I can proceed?

You should call for an appointment— when the receptionist asks what it is for, just say “I have a concern about one of my teeth that was worked on, and I’d like the dentist to take a look.” That will be better than trying to describe over the phone. Then, when the dentist arrives, point to that tooth and say “I noticed that this one was filled. I was actually thinking that was the tooth that needed a root canal?…”. Say it in a tone of “I’m curious, can you please help me understand?” Not in a confrontational way. Because all you’re really doing is seeking more information, and that’s a very normal thing to do!

Congrats at getting the treatment! The filling you get after a RCT is usually temporary, and have to return for a permanent one later. Maybe it's just a temp filling you have? Maybe your tooth did not need a RCT after all. Does the tooth hurt? Did you get an X-ray? Even if it was filled as a mistake, it certainly did not damage the tooth further, they can simply drill it out, do the root canal, fill it again. Worst case scenario, work was missed, but no harm done. You already sat through 6 fillings, so you have nothing to worry about.
Do not speculate too much, that only results in more anxiety. @HeatherWasHere 's answer is great, just ask them to take a look.
