Dentist needed for peer review of 2 splints I was given

Hello I need to get a peer review or second opinion of two splints that I was given by a dentist. One is Anterior Deprogrammer the other is a Tanner Appliance. According to my records the dentist writes that he modified the traditional design of the Tanner Appliance to make it into an Anterior Deprogrammer by adding an 8mm high wedge to the front of the splint. I wore the splints under his supervision for 18 months. I found out in August last year from my current dentist that both splints were designed in such a way that they pulled my jaw forwards into a very unnatural position. This put my Class 1 teeth into a class 3 malocclusion and I now have an Anterior Open Bite. The repercussions of this are devastating

Could anyone advise how to find a dentist willing to peer review the splints? I need someone knowledgeable and trained in splint therapy, splint design and occlusion. As I am receiving treatment for the AOB from an experienced Kings College tutor I only need a second opinion of the splints themselves.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received

Hi, I'm not really sure if a dental phobia support forum is the best place to get advice for this particular type of question (GDC complaints and/or legal action).

It is, however, the type of question that pops up quite frequently on forums like Money Saving Expert (a UK website). So I would expect people there to perhaps be able to give you more detailed advice and/or share their own experiences with similar issues. The correct section to post in would be the "Health and Beauty Moneysaving" one:

Hoping that you can find someone to help you ?

Hi thanks for your reply. I need to report the dentist to GDC but have found out they don’t have the expertise or knowledge required to assess the negligent occlusion and splint therapy I received. I have also tried Dental Law Partnership but again ran into the same problem as only about 1% of dentists have training and expertise in this area. I will try the site you mention. I am also trying Teaching Hospitals who have Tutors Specialising in occlusion and splint therapy.

I hope that my post might help others on Dental Fear Central as I have been reading posts by people who have found themselves in the same or similar situation as me. They are suffering similar levels of mental distress and desperation. Messing up people’s occlusion is utterly life changing. I hope to help stop maverick dentists like the one who has harmed me. I am trying to get the splints peer reviewed by someone with suitable specialism so that GDC can fully appreciate and understand the issues I need them to investigate.

Bit puzzled by this, the GDC is perfectly capable of appointing experts to review a case if it needs to, it seems a bit unfair that they would expect a lay person to organise this for them.
Do you have this in writing from them? If so I would raise a complaint to the CE of the GDC, Ian Brack, you'll find his contact details on their website.

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a speciality in occlusion and splint therapy. Hence why you won't find any reputable dentist calling themselves a specialist in the subject, indeed they'd be opening themselves up to action by the GDC if they did.

Peer review is a US concept and doesn't really exist in the UK.

Sorry, it sounds like I'm being negative here and I'm trying to be helpful.

Hello thanks for your reply. I wish I had known in 2019 that dentists aren’t allowed to claim they are Specialists if they are not accredited as one with GDC. The dentist who destroyed my bite is advertising that he is an Occlusion Specialist and muggins here fell for it ?

The reason for seeking a peer review of the splints is because I had the Dental Law Partnership look at my case and the report they sent rejecting my claim revealed they don’t have expertise in occlusion or splint therapy. I have no faith that GDC will select the right Expert Witness either. I am determined to get this dentist and the technician struck off as what they did to me is highly dangerous.

I am delighted to say I now have had 3 UK based dentists from Spear Faculty offering to review the splints and help me.

Thank you once again for your comments ?
