do most patients with periodontal disease require several times of deep cleaning ??

Hi I have periodontal disease of beginning to moderate. The periodontist said deep cleaning was required for me but the price he quoted was super expensive which is several times more expensive than general dentist. I see some people in the chatroom saying that after several months of deep cleaning treatment they have to recall and do the treatment again, some said after several years. I'd like to know if deep cleaning treatment is useful and if it's really that easy for the gum inflammation to become uncontrolled again. Does it largely depend on how high quality I keep my oral hygiene afterwards or does it depend on something else that is regardless of how clean I am doing?

Re: do most patients with periodontal disease require several times of deep cleaning ??

deep cleaning cost 200-350/ quadrant in the USA
Injectable antibiotics can boost the expense considerably with marginal return
After everything is done expect to be seen every 3 months as long as you want teeth. Root planning may be repeated after some years but I have many faithful patients that have gone 10 years.

is 200-350 / quadrant the price for a dentist or periodontal specialist?

what is the price / quadrant for the treatment done by a specialist in USA?

My periodontal specialist is asking USD 5,000 for the deep cleaning treatment package that includes everything and hygiene lesson, x-rays and a few follow-up recalls, I have been thinking thinking and thinking..hesitating and hesitating for weeks... I know it is not about buying a phone, it's about my health, I should find someone I trust, I trust him... I know sometimes confidence means more expensive, but it's just like TOO much overpriced that I am feeling confident and at the same time I am feeling being robbed.

His titles and experience is doubtless, his location, environment and service is perfect. But this is not important to me. I just wish to know if deep cleaning done by a careful expensive specialist and an inexpensive dentist could make the world huge difference.... This is something I have been thinking , researching for weeks but have never got an answer. I don't know if the big money will actually go to their environment and rents or if it would really make the world difference.

Could it also mean less likely to do the ''root planning'' again after several years as you said if it's done by a perfect specialist together with daily high quality hygiene?

What is the ''above average'' price for the treatment I mentioned above to be done by a periodontal specialist in USA? which includes x-rays, two recalls, hygiene instructions and possibly antibotics or medicine, full package.??

Please help. I am now like being trapped mentally, I don't know what to do. Big hesitation. Sorry

That sounds like a lot of money for what he is asking, but might not be completely out of the ball park. I moderate to severe gum disease (with teeth pockets ranging from 4-7 mm) and here is what my treatment plan currently is to deal with this issue:

1) Deep cleaning UL and LL - at $550 without insurance or $326 with insurance
2) Deep cleaning UR and LR - at $550 without insurance or $326 with insurance

3) Gum Flap Surgery UL & LL - at $2,600 without insurance or $1694 with insurance

4) Gum Flap Surgery check up - probably around $100 with insurance

5) Perio maintenance x 2 times this year - at $440 without insurance or $182 with insurance

6) Initial exam with x-rays - at $325 without insurance or $133 with insurance

I know this is just for this year - and I will have to continue with check ups often for my gum disease, but this totals (with gum flap surgery, which is something you didn't even list).

Total without insurance: $4565 and with insurance: $2761

I live in New Jersey and I think my dental office is one of the more expensive ones in the area, but I love going there, it is near by, it takes my insurance and has all of the different kinds of dentists a person could ever need in one location, and I love the dentists there so I'm not about to go change to a cheaper place.

Re: do most patients with periodontal disease require several times of deep cleaning ??

I had a partial deep cleaning where they focused on the problem areas, while doing a general cleaning on the other teeth. Through the periodontist, that cost a total of $400 without insurance. Another $135 for the initial exam. Then I was told I should go in every 3-4 months for a regular cleaning. The regular cleaning through my periodontist is $119.

When I was pricing it out, my regular dentist said it would cost $285 per quadrant (without insurance). My insurance covers regular cleanings, but I know they charge $90 for a regular cleaning without insurance. I have no clue what x-rays would cost.

As for how often you'll need cleanings, that depends on how your gums react. My pockets were 2-4's, with a couple of 5's. I had one deep cleaning, then came back 2 months and was told I only need regular cleanings every 3-4 months for a year, where we'll decide the next step.

I can only speak for myself and don't know about most patients but mine was $2,000 and I only needed it done once. Once you get it done and then floss daily and keep up with your regular cleanings at the dentist you should be fine

May I ask where you are?

This is good news to hear! I've been flossing almost daily (I've missed maybe 7 days over 3+ months I've started, which is WAY better than before) and brushing my teeth daily (at least once a day, usually twice a day, and a few times 3 times a day). There's less gum bleeding and to me, my tooth pockets seem smaller (I hope, I pray!). I don't mind the deep cleaning process, but my bank account can't deal with it.

Re: do most patients with periodontal disease require several times of deep cleaning ??

Good oral hygiene is crucial.

Had deep clean for all four quadrants. Follow up for deep clean reveal that it was a success.

Now I'm wearing a brace and looking forward to perfectly straight teeth.

Initially the perio had wanted me to see him every 3-4 months after I start on the braces.

Had a review recently and he was so happy with how good everything look that he doesn't see the need to see me till 6 months later.

What is your daily oral care at home like? Just wondering.... :) I'm hoping my dentist will be happy with my progress, so I'm interested in knowing what others are doing.

Re: do most patients with periodontal disease require several times of deep cleaning ??

Flossing and cleaning with proxy brushes after breakfast and before bed, cleaning with just the proxy brushes after lunch. I brush as per normal after flossing and using the proxy brushes. I use a power brush when I'm at home and a regular brush at work. Only reason I brush after lunch is because I'm wearing a brace.
