Do soft biteguards stop your teeth from shifting, and must all people with root canals wear a biteguard?

I am rather confused about biteguards.

I was told that wearing a soft biteguard would to some extent stop the natural shifting of teeth as time goes on. Is this true?

And then I was told that all adults clench and grind their teeth at night, is that right?
I know that I don't habitually do this as my mouth/jaw is relaxed each time I wake in the night and I have to remember to keep my mouth shut when I sleep.

And also I was told that therefore if you have any root canals, (which would have an onlay or crown), then you must wear a mouthguard at night otherwise the clenching or grinding that all adults do could break the root canalled tooth. Is this right?

I am fine to wear one if recommended, I just don't quite understand the reasoning behind it.

Depends how long during the day you wear it for, but yes, kind of.

No.

No.

Thank you that's really helpful Gordon! I should have said the soft mouthguard was to be worn just at night - so I was told it would stop shifting to some extent, if I was wearing it 8 hours out of 24.
