Hi there - I urgently need a dentist in either Dundee or Aberdeen area but haven't been for years and am terrified. I will need teeth out and would want a general anaesthetic. I would be willing to go private but have no idea what this would cost. Can anyone help - it is very - ouch - urgent!

Hi ...I'm in Aberdeen.

I doubt very much you will find a dentist who does general anaesthesia in their dental practice. Have a look through the archives here for more information, but you may have to go to your doc and ask to be referred to have your teeth taken out at a private hospital. This will be pretty hefty as regards costs.

IV sedation however is a similar effect to a GA - ie, sit in chair, get an IV in your arm, next thing you know you are in Reception and it is all over.

Obviously the sedation is a one off fee no matter how many teeth there are to come out.

You wont get IV sedation on the NHS.

And remember - seriously - NOTHING that ever happens in the dentist chair in 2011 is ever as painful as the toothache pain you are having now. It's a whole different ball game from the 70/80's, even 90's.

I don't know about Aberdeen specifically but you can get i/v sedation on the NHS in many parts of the country, but usually at a referral practice. They seem to have upped their game somewhat in this department. They sometimes however only do extractions and not root canals under this method whereas a private dentist would do pretty much anything you wanted under i/v sedation.

Thanks both for your replies. I have been looking into IV sedation and it looks ideal - hadn't known about it before. Does anyone know a dentist in Dundee who uses this either privately or NHS? Many thanks

Thanks Brit.

I tried to find a NHS dentist in Aberdeen who did sedation and it was impossible.

Hmmm.

...actually, it was impossible to find an NHS dentist in Aberdeen accepting new patients!! :devilish:

The community dental service in Dundee is likely to offer IV sedation, do a Google search for it.

Of course, usual NHS restrictions will apply (such as no really fancy stuff like implants or specialist endodontists), but they should have people who are trained in dealing with anxious patients :) (one would hope anyway). Not sure how long the waiting list is though, it varies from area to area.
